Sometimes a Picture can speak a Thousand words! As the title suggests trying to decipher the Help file Example of this function leaves me "mind boggled "

Chris, sample tables would help us help you.

Here's an example using AlphaSports:

'lookup the ship_same field value for customer_id = "00000037"

?lookupL("F","00000037","Ship_same","customer","Customer_I")
= .T.

The function takes 5 arguments:

"F" tells the function to lookup the first matching record
"00000037" is the search key, it must correspond to the indextag identified later
"Ship_Same" is the field name from which a logical field value is to be returned
"Customer" is the lookup table name
"Customer_I" is the indextag name to be used to do the search

Basically, the function loads a table, sets an index primary, and then does a indexed find by key using a search key that you specify. It then returns a logical field value from the found record, and then closes the table. You could do the same thing in a multi-step script, but this is easier.

In this case, with the function

LookupL()

It wants to return a logical field value.

Hi Chris,
I can read it fine so we must have similar screen resolutions....but I solve most problems "hands on" with samples as am terrible with guessing!!

Here's a guess--

Or maybe just "17654" instead of reservation+"=17654"

Still lost in L , have gone in a different direction to obtain required result. Will try from time to time to figure it out! The examples in the help file are a bit of a tongue twister in that both tables have same field names and index is almost the same context.

From a form based on the customers table I want to lookup the logical value of a ordernum in the clarify table

You can do this in field rules, calc field, xbasic, etc. In other words, it doesn't matter where you do it from as long as you supply the correct info.

Chris, you need to explain what you want to do. I'm not sure but my guess is that there is a problem in your basic table structure and you are trying to do something the wrong way. Your example leaves me with these questions:

1. The Customer table has a Reservation number. Does each "customer" have only one reservation number? (In other words, if the same customer comes in tomorrow, do we know that or is it a completely new record with no reference to the "original" customer from yesterday.)
2. Is the reservation number a numeric field or a character field?
3. How many orders can there be for any one reservation number?
4. IF there can be multiple order numbers for any one reservation, how will you identify the one you want.

And, the really big question: Do you actually want to look up the value or do you really want to look up the customer and just display the status of the order(s)? In this case....
(a) You don't need a lookup at all. Just create a set with the Clarify table linked to the Customer table and display the results on the form. (link by Reservation field in Customer to Order_num in Clarify table)
(b) If there is only one order (Clarify record) for each Customer, why do you even have a separate Clarify table?
