Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Packing a table from the control panel produces an error

    Martin,
I agree wholeheartedly that the cause must be cured and in my case I knew what the cause was (bad code placed on the OnInit event that should not have been placed there--caused Many problems!).

But I guess my main point was to get my forms back and the only thing I had to do was change the truncated names back to the long names that were there before the problem caused it. Nothing else had corrupted.

Well - do this: make a folder copy of a known good build (from before the errors started to occur.) If you later find other problems after fixing the names, you can open the 'good copy' and see what the field rules were, layouts were, etc.

Re: Packing a table from the control panel produces an error

Thanks for all the sugestions, I will try the new ones tomorrow and post back my findings.

        BUT............

I do not believe that I (the developer) should be able to do something (bad, coding or whatever) to "corrupt" my table in such a way that it seems inaccessable. This is a concern to me and not what I expected from A5. Remember that I can "duplicate" the table (its structure), but still the new file is "unpackable". Surely!!

What is your take on this?

Re: Packing a table from the control panel produces an error

          George,
It makes perfect sense to me I'm afraid. How can you pack or do anything to a table whose field names no longer match anything??? Just that alone makes each form that has these fields have errors and with enough errors I can easily imagine how a form cannot even open. As Martin mentioned there no doubt is something else that caused the truncation but until you resolve this you won't be able to even try to figure it out.

"corrupt" my table in such a way that it seems inaccessable
Apparently you have never inadvertantly caused an infinite loop in your scripting?? :D

Re: Packing a table from the control panel produces an error

By golly, may have the answer. I did this and had same problem or close.

I moved a table to another folder and db, It had a good number of field rules and a few indexes. Moved some fields around in the structure, added and removed a couple fields, then dropped it back to the original folder and db without the support files. Messed the whole thing up. BIG TIME and no - could not pack that table. fields were truncated too.

            Hope this helps.

Dave - all that proves is that the support files have to go with the dbf.

                Martin,

I knew it then and know it now, forgot I changed the table around. Not sure if that may have happened to George.

If nothing changed but the data, You should, but don't have to, move the support files.

true - my backups include *.dbf, *.fpt, and *.cdx
I include the cdx-es so it is instantly ready

More tables are now corrupt, un-packable and with column names truncated.
I have logged a bug request with Alpha Software.

I have just upgraded my v8 project to v9, and find myself in a bit of bother.

Packing a table using the pack command by right clicking a table in the control panel produces an error message Could not pack or rebuild Indexes for c:\source\customer.dbfs Dictionary. The update indexes command works fine and the table is NOT open, I have checked.

I have now tried everything to resolve the issue but have now exhausted my ideas. What do you suggest I try? Unfortunately the error message is not very clear on what is causing the situation.

                      Kind regards

there is a bug in a5v9 (fixed in next update).
if you pack a table from the control panel, you get an error message.
the error message is wrong - the table is packed.
after you dismiss the message box it appears as if the long field names in your table have been lost.

the long field names have NOT been lost. if you close and reopen the database, you will see they are all still there.

this bug is fixed and will be in the next update. (next week).

if you pack your tables from an xbasic script, then it works fine.

the problem only happens if you pack by right clicking on the table at the control panel.
