Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

evoking a hide subform from another subform

Anyone know the answer to this?

    I have the following setup:

    A5 V9 plat.

    1 database, no set

Mainform with 3 buttons, 3 subforms
    on subform1 1 browse
    on subform2 2 buttons
    on subform3 text

When on the mainform user pushes button1, subform1 is shown, subform2 and subform3 are hidden
    "" button2, subform2 is shown, subform1 and subform3 are hidden, etc....

When the user clicks one of the buttons on subform2 (still there ?) it should do the following: show subform1, hide subform2 and subform3

i do this with xbasic..... topparent:subform1.show()
    topparent:subform2.hide()
    topparent:subform3.hide()

This works, but does something weird!
Subform1 is shown correctly but when i click in the browse subform2 is suddenly shown over subform1 ??

    Why does this happen ?

    thank you for the help,

    Olivier

    Hi Olivier,
My guess for why is Gremlins :D Have you tried a conditional object based on a variable which your buttons set to change the page?

      Olivier,

Try using the visible property instead of show and hide.

      topparent:Form1.Object.Visible =.T. or .F.

I just did it on a form and had no problem utilizing it...one thing to make sure of is to unhide the subforms--do not believe Alpha can "see" them either!

Re: evoking a hide subform from another subform

            when i try

            ui_msg_box("test",topparent:subform1.form.name)

it gets me the right name of the form the subform1 is linked to, so the reference topparent:subform1 is ok...

If you want to sure, but posting Apps here on the messageboard is usually done for the benefit of all and you may get many more resposes that way too...but if you have reservations about doing so not a problem. Just let me know and will private message you with either my email or set up for a FTP .

Re: evoking a hide subform from another subform

Mike, i've created a test app and attached it...

when you click the buttons on the form the app alternatively shows subform1 or subform2...

But, when you click the close button on subform2 initially you think everything works correctly as it shows subform1 again and hides subform2.
When you click however on the text subform1 the close button of subform2 appears ??

This is exactly how it happens in my app?

                  any clues ?

                  thanx!!

Re: evoking a hide subform from another subform

                      Olivier,

Your form has a case of "bleed through" which happens on occasion and not sure if a fix has ever been tried by Alpha for it....but think I got it decent enough for you now...take a look at all 3 button's OnPush events.

Another thing to be aware of is that you have all the forms set to have a horizontal gradient--unless the forms are the same size in the direction of the gradient the smaller forms will not match the larger--not possible!! So the way you have it now you can see the smaller form's edges.

Now--I am using v8 so open this zip into a different folder separate from your actual database. Even with the same version this should be the practice.

                      Mike

Fantastic Mike, works like a champ ! thank you

I did not know that one can call a button push on the topparent...

When i comment the two first lines where you set the visible property it still works since it pushes button1 !

thank you very much for your help,

                        Olivier

                          Olivier,

                          you're welcome.

It's a work-a-round and just wish it didn't have to be done---It might be that we just aren't supposed to do things like this and maybe a work-a-round is the only way to get this and other minor annoyances to function the way we want them. :)

Although your problem has been resolved, have you considered using form by expression? That may be the best way to handle multi subforms that are displayed individually.
