Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help file

I have asked and dont seem to be getting anywhere, and I think this needs to be said on this board.

V9 is a fantastic improvement on V8, as that was over ....etc. However where Alpha five seems to fall down is the help file. There are new commands to version 8 that have not made it into the help file let alone the new those of version 9. I cant speak for others but most times I use an out of the ordinary command I like (or often need) to look up the command and like to see an example. I have not been able to do this for anything that has evolved in the last 18 months and have to resort to loading one of the sample databases and working through the syntax in the whats new sections and then using trial and error to get it to work correctly, an example is all the ui_context... commands, I think I have them working correctly but am not sure.

Surely the help file is part of what we purchase and should be updated when the overall package is updated.

Just my rant as I am getting very frustrated.

Lance, I'm surprised you haven't received a response. I'm just looking at coming back to A5, and I'll certainly need help, especially on the new stuff. How about the web help?

      Lance,

Ever since the person in charge of technical specs & documentation left Alpha 1.5 to 2 years ago (whom they have not been able to replace), said documentation has fallen to the wayside. They have attempted to fill this void w. videos, but of course, videos, however useful, are not a substitution for text references. Apparently there are no available technical writers out there.

And videos don't "work" for everyone... for me personally, if I can't select, copy & view the code of an example I am shown, it might as well be made of plasticene....

          Re: Help file

Talking about the help file; I downloaded new small and large help files hoping that there would be more current info than I had in the original install.
I replaced the help file in the a5v9 folder and now I have no help. I can view either help file directly but not through the help selection on the menu.
How do I fix this? Les
