Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Lookup Value Of A Time Field

    But Tim!

I have seen you use this property many a time and now Selwyn has presented it also....but the help link you provided is doing it just the opposite!! It is stating that the second part of a concatenation, when character, is what makes the First part become a character when it initially is not! You and Selwyn have always shown that by having the first a character value it will automatically change the second into character if it is not initially.

I am thinking that obviously the documentation is backwards....or am I seeing things that just are not there!!!???

EDIT--or does it mean that if ANY part of the concantenation is character then all will be??

Just did the required testing and my edit above was correct---it does not matter if a character is before or after any non-character value, it will be changed to character regardless. ..had always thought it had to be the first. I used the comment on Tim's link in the documentation to maybe have it changed to show this.

Re: Lookup Value Of A Time Field

The concatenation operator appends Operand2 (a character value) to Operand1. If Operand1 is not a character value, it is automatically converted to a character value before the concatenation operation.

          My Point:

It matters not which operand is the character value....and there can be 3, 4 ,5, or however many of other operand types (non-character) and they all will be converted to character.

            Mike,

Thanks for pointing this out and for sending the request to change the documentation. When I started to use alpha I found this in the help pretty much the same time I saw its use (reversed) in alpha sample code so I just assumed what you have discovered in your testing. From now on (at least till the help gets changed) I will point that out in future references to this feature.

              basically:

              1 + 2 = 3
              2 + 1 = 3

Re: Lookup Value Of A Time Field

Not sure why this is confusing.. or what needs to be changed in the docs? The docs as far as I rememebr and I haven't looked at recently does not specify any certain order nor any certain number nor does it need to. It's a matter of simple logic.

It is simply not possible to change character to anything else, but the opposite is true:
What is the numeric (or date or logical) value of "Gabriel"?
                Hmmmm?

So, if you concatenate anything with character, everything is changed to character. Character is the "Mother of All" types... because everything is written to the table in character but when you specify a field as numeric, date, or logical these are only instructions to alpha as to how to treat these characters.

There are no separate ASCI character for the number one and the character one. They are both one and the same. It only becomes numeric when alpha treats it as such.
