Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Distribute RunEngine or Runtime?

    Good day,

    Background:
I purchased the run engine from AlphaSoftware. I am using Astrum to create installations, and now want to include the run engine so that its installed on my clients pc.

    Question:
But now I notice that both an A5v9 runtime and A5v9 Runtime folder exist on my pc, That raises the question which folder should I distribute to my customer?.

    Kind regards
    George

    George,

I purchased the run engine from AlphaSoftware.
Did you purchase both runtimes or just the 1 runtime and which one(s)?

As a thought, if you start an install of your runtime, it will default to where you last installed it. You can then cancel the install with the knowledge of the path.

      Re: Distribute RunEngine or Runtime?

Dave, that is my point. Since I only purchased the "run engine" I am confused why the "run times" are installed and that me wonder what I should be distributing to the clients?

        Re: Distribute RunEngine or Runtime?

        George,

How many users? Whiche runtime did you purchase?? how did it get installed? Which folder has the newer file dates(on the files it holds)???

Another possibility is to delete both of them. Is probably what I would do. Then on reinstall, you should have only one folder.

My runtime is installed into my app folder so I don't have the problem you do. You can install to any and many folders. I am careful to make sure the current RT install is the one in my app folder when I use my installer. I don't like to write to program files due to failures in the past.

Some do it different and have a runtime in a folder on the c: drive and place their apps in folders underneath the runtime folder.

I hope something I said here helps you. The answers to the first questions may help a lot.

          Thanks Dave.

I forgot that I have a few Alpha third party tools. I might be one of them.

Will start the process of uninstalling al Alpha related software and then install them one at a time to see which one is the culprit.

          Regards

            Re: Distribute RunEngine or Runtime?

            Found the culprit!

It appears that even though I installed the RunEngine, the patch does not recognize the installed path and creates (by default) another folder. Yes off course the user can manually intervene and force the patch to install in the correct folder, bit that is not what I expected the behaviour to be.

            Question:
What do you think the RE or RT patch installation behaviour should be?

            Regards
            George

LOL that cracked me up... I assume you meant to type "IT" not "I" - otherwisem, don't be so hard on yourself, calling yoruself a tool! ;)

It's weird though, there have been a fair few problems cropping up recently to do with case sensitivity and changing cases in file names and extensions...

                Ha ha, well spotted Andrea.

As stated earlier i belive that the patch installation behaviour is not correct. But I am keen to hear the thoughts of other users.

What I noticed is that the installer, as the screenshot on another thread (about the install freezing) shows, seems to have an extra \ in the install path, I wonder if this could cause problems?

                    George,

I don't have the runtime for v9 yet so I can't play with it. Was going from experience of a few years ago when our own installer(we made it wrong) would see an installand automatically install to a new folder. Was NOT funny.

                      Re: Distribute RunEngine or Runtime?

I am happy to report that the latest patches for the RE & RT will remember the last installation path and default to that location. Yes the user can change the path if they wish to do so.

                      Kind regards
