Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    lookups not updating

I have a main form, it has a couple of fields on it that are populated from a lookup.

    Everything works spectacularly.

My lookups are from a seperate table.

I have the MAIN form open.
I go to enter my category field, I pull it down and see the available categoies
    I want a new one.

I leave the main form open.

I open my form that is attached to the category table.
I add a new category and save it.

I now go back to my main form
pull down category field,, the new category is NOT there!!!!

If I close the form and open it,
    the new category is there!

ALSO I initially was going ot try and edit the category from an embeded brwose control. THEN it worked. I could change the category table. go back to the main form and the new category would be there.

SO HOW do I get the lookup from another table
to update on my form without, restarting the form!

    thanks

    Re: lookups not updating

Why not enable the entry of new records to the lookup table via the existing table lookup field rule? User displays list; enters new record; selects it. The selected field value is entered into the original form.

      NOW this is wierd!

If I remove an item from the category table, save and close
go to the main table and pull down the field
      the REMOVED item is gone!!!!!!!!!!!

NEW items will NOT show up until I close and open the form
but REmoved items are instantly removed!

What if I do a new item and a remove at the same time
      the removed is removed
the new item does not show up

then I try to edit an existing category item
the EDIT shows up in the main form!

      total wierdness

Because, when I tried that, it was an utter disaster!
Plus I want to edit more than just one field.

          what does 'utter disaster' mean?

          1. tom's suggestion is correct. and it works fine.

if you look at alphasports, sample 'inovice' form. lookup for the product_id in the embedded browse. you can edit any of the records there by clicking on the pencil. that brings up a form of your choice and and you can edit any of the fields that you want.

          2. again using alphasports, after i opened the invoice form, i then went and added new products to the products table by opening the products form.
then, going back to the invoice form, the new products were visible immediately in the lookup. did not have to close and reopen the form.

            Re: lookups not updating

            I figured it out!

The time I tired it before, I did not like it, because it allowed the user to edit the LINK field! NOT a good thing at all!!!! What I consider disaster!

But I played with it. The problem was selecting the box
"user can add records to look up table"
if that is not selected, then the main form does not update!

So I selected that, and then selected MY form for updating categories
This form does not show the ID (link) field!

When I put those Two together, the lookup works exactly like I want it to!

            Thanks!

Ah yes, aside from letting you use the fields you actually WANT the user to edit, a form you choose also looks a lot better than the default form, which can look pertty horrid depending on what's in the table!
