Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

PDF Version of V9 Help File

    To All:

As most of you are probably aware Alpha released the Help File in PDF format. I really like the idea of being able to read up on a function while on a plane or train.

The only problem with the version that Alpha released is it does NOT have hyperlinks within the document, just some chapter headings.

There is a product called CHMMagic that will take a CHM and produce a fully interactive PDF file.

The program has a trial and allows you to create the PDF although the document does have a header saying the document was prepared with the trial version.

The one negative is the file size. The small help file turns into almost a 43 meg file. The large help files turns out to be over 100 megs.

I am not sure about the copyright, but if anyone wants a copy of the help file in interactive PDF format and does not want to create it themselves, just send me an email and tell me which version (small, large or both) you want.

Remember even zipped, the email will be quite large (23 megs for the small version) so your ISP must allow you to get very large emails.

    [email protected]

PS...Maybe Alpha would want them to post on their website. I uploaded them one for Version 8 but I don't think they ever posted it.

    Thanks for the help Barry.

Is it not possable for you to place the file on some ftp site from where we can download it? If not, you can mail it to me and I will place it on my ftp site.

    Kind regards
    George

InDesign (Adobe Product) will export to PDF also. It has a feature called Paragraph Styles that allows one to apply specific styles to headings and then from that create the hyperlinks. If AlphaSoftware created the document in the application it would make it easier to make changes and have the export feature handy.

The current V9 Help file needs a lot of work since it doesn't appear to have really that much about the current features. IMO

Also, the online version does not work right in FoxFire browser. Personally, I hate IE as a browser. Especially with all the problems from hacks.

Re: PDF Version of V9 Help File

OK..I have converted the small & large Help files with a product called CHMMagic. This product keeps all links and makes it MUCH easier to use than the PDF's from ALPHA.

I have posted them into a folder on my server which can be accessed at:

        http://alpha.411tech.org:81/

You will be presented with a folder listing and you can right click on any of the files and save them to disk.

I am having intermittent broadband issues. CableVision is coming out tomorrow, so if you can't access the files, please try again later.

OK, I finally got my FTP Server working correctly. My anti-virus deleted the executable.

To access the zip files of the PDF's you can now go to:

          ftp://alpha.411tech.org:2121 and use anonymous login.

I use port 2121 to try to limit my exposure to bots.

If you have any difficulty, just let me know.

Since posting the PDF's online I have had numerous people connect and download the files. The easiest way to do it is to just click on either link to access the files in IE or Mozilla:

              http://alphs.411tech.org:81 or
              ftp://alpha.411tech.org:2121

The ftp link should be quicker and more reliable.I use the product SERV-U by Rhinosoft as the FTP server. for the other link I am use A5V8 WAS with directory browsing enabled.

              Hope this helps.

That's why I gave two different ways to connect. If one doesn't work for you, try the other.

                          Hi Barry,

Thank you so much for taking the time to post the help files, I did confirm that your ftp server is NOT working but the web server is. Just food for thought on y the ftp server mite not be working, did you make a DNS record pointing to your ftp server? or maybe your service provider has blocked that port and wont allow access to it?

I did download the two help files though.
                          Kind Regards,

Your Welcome George and all who download.

Like I said in a previous post, I am having issues with my broadband connection. This has been going on close to two months and I am getting to the end of my rope.

Some might ask why Have I stayed as long as I have...A few reasons:

                              - When it works I get 25 Meg Down 4.5 meg Up speeds.
                              - With BOOST addon for $5 I get a Website and unlimited DDNS to my office servers where I host Alpha, EMail, Helpdesk (Spiceworks) and other apps. For those that don't understand DDNS, since my WAN IP can change, my broadband provider controls the DDNS so whenever my IP changes the DDNS changes also. The DDNS is just a subdomain of my real domain so it is very natural for a user to use http://alpha.411tech.org:81 or http://helpdesk.411tech.org:9675/helpdesk to contact my different sites and servers.
                              - I have had the service going on six years and this is the frist time I am having issues.
                              - I use VOIP for my 2 lines and I would hate to go back to landline just for DSL.
                              - Instead of paying for a VPS I use my own server and save alot of money.

All three connections to the PDF are working right now.

                              ftp://alpha.411tech.org:2121

                              http://www.411tech.org/program.htm

The first two listed are located in my office on a dedicated server. The third is the hosted website provided by Cablevision.
