Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    SQL Tables

    Hi All,

I'm dipping my toes into SQL.

How do you create an SQL table?

First off, you need a SQL database running that you can connect to... check out mySQL, it's free.

You can use export operations to create tables in SQL databases from DBF or active link files in your A5 database.

Keith - I've asked about how to get started with SQL a couple times here. While I welcome the responses I got, it never really satisfied me. Kinda like asking how to build a house and someone tells you you need a foundation, walls and a roof. OK, but where & how to start.

I love w3schools and found this that helped a lot.

      http://www.w3schools.com/sql/default.asp

Before I got very far, I started trying to implement this stuff in Alpha. What I discovered is that you really need to know very little about SQL to get started using it in Alpha.

Download and configure MySQL so it's running on your machine. That's the fastest, it's fairly simple, and free. Spend a bit of time at w3schools to understand, then come back to A5 and see how our favorite piece of software actually just handles all of this for you without you becoming an SQL guru.

I agree, especially if you use mySQL with the native AlphaDAO drivers, which seem to be the "most compatible"...

The beauty is that with V9 you can design your tables in Alpha5 and create them in the remote SQL database without needing to interact with the database directly/much.

          Hi,

I downloaded MS SQL Server 2005, is that no good?

Ok, so now I have the MySQL server loaded and running.

I'm using Alpha to export the Customer table to SQL.

          Please see attached message.

I am obviously doing something wrong, but what?

Keith this will suffice its the replacement of MSDE which was supplied origninally with Office installation CDs to provide a data engine for developers. This version behaves exactly as the full blown server and is free!. The limitations are documented and the default no remote TCPIP can be overridden through the accompanying SQL Server Management Studio Express.

            But then again:
Basic research is what I am doing when I don't know what I am doing and to steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research!

I'm sure it isn't supposed to let you do that without selecting a database!

When building your connection string, you have to click "Refresh" and then select one of the databases available, or create a new database using the option provided in the connection string dialog (best done through Tools > External Databases > Manage External Connection Strings > AlphaDAO Connection Strings).

                Thanks to you both.

I have now created my first sql table and an active link table.

*Gulp*... that must be an undocumented feature in mySQL ;)

Sounds like a bad English habbit!

Before you take over the world, are there speed difference between using your dbf files as opposed to MYSQL?

Incidentally, I am going to go out on a limb here and say, most people who work with SQL don't know much about SQL but enough about their DBMS. Is that a fair statment?

                      Keith,

I'll make you a deal: I'll support you in your worldwide takeover, if you make me President of the US of A! (I have a major over-haul planned )
