Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Bug on the Query Builder?

    Hi to everybody!

I've found a bug on the reporting section of the Platinum version.

    To verify follow these instructions:

    - Right clic on a report and select "Edit data source" to modify a previously created sql statement
    - Select "Edit ad hoc data source"
    - clic on "Next" button
    - on the next screen clic on "Query Builder..." button
    - on the SQL genie screen clic on the Filter tab

now clic on the "value/expression" field (when a previously created "where" clause is on that field) and then clic on the arrow that move on the right the panel of conditions (the button with the ">" under the expressions). The "value/expression" field is cleared!

    I can reproduce the situation.

    My SQL statement:

    SELECT MOTRICI_ASSICURAZIONI.MAS_TARGA AS targa, MOTRICI.MOT_DESCRIZIONE AS descrizione, FORNITORI.FOR_RAGIONE_SOCIALE AS compagnia, MOTRICI_ASSICURAZIONI.MAS_NR_DOCUMENTO AS nr_documento, MOTRICI_ASSICURAZIONI.MAS_DATA_SCADENZA AS data_scadenza
    FROM (MOTRICI_ASSICURAZIONI MOTRICI_ASSICURAZIONI
    LEFT OUTER JOIN MOTRICI MOTRICI
    ON (MOTRICI_ASSICURAZIONI.MAS_TARGA = MOTRICI.MOT_TARGA)
    LEFT OUTER JOIN FORNITORI FORNITORI
    ON (MOTRICI_ASSICURAZIONI.MAS_COMPAGNIA = FORNITORI.FOR_CODICE))
    WHERE motrici_assicurazioni.mas_anno_competenza in (SELECT MAX(x.mas_anno_competenza) FROM motrici_assicurazioni x
    WHERE (x.mas_targa = motrici_assicurazioni.mas_targa and x.mas_compagnia = motrici_assicurazioni.mas_compagnia and x.mas_nr_documento = motrici_assicurazioni.mas_nr_documento) )
    ORDER BY MOTRICI_ASSICURAZIONI.MAS_DATA_SCADENZA, FORNITORI.FOR_RAGIONE_SOCIALE, MOTRICI_ASSICURAZIONI.MAS_TARGA

Thanks in advance for your interest.

Re: Bug on the Query Builder?

    Sergio,
Not everyone here that helps others will have "a previously created sql statement" and even if they did your statement may very well something that is different enough to cause some odd behavior***.....so instead of having someone attempt to reproduce your particular scenario, which in most likelihood would not happen, create a simple sample that someone can verify/reproduce the problem so that it can be sent in as a bug--you would have to do just this anyways to submit a bug report so help us help you by doing so now.

......now watch someone will come along and read your mind and get to the root of the problem!!! Not likely but with my luck of late it might happen!.

***I have had other problems that cause a field to clear/disappear and it was due to incorrect/faulty script.

EDIT: I just realized this was your first post! And as such you may be unaware of how the fastest way to get an answer to a problem--that is to attach a small samplle to a post . Zip up a sample (maybe even the entire database if small enoungh), use the paperclip icon at the top of an advanced reply message to browse for the zip, upload it, then go back to the paperclip icon and choose the attachment--it will attach wherever you cursor happens to be as far as placement on your message.

    BTW--Welcome to the forums!!

You have two WHERE statements, that's bound to cause trouble...

The statement is correct. It retrieves the record if it is the one related to the last year inserted (read the max clause). The sql works as it should. The problem in only in the AlphaFive Query Builder form, that clears the statement when I clic on the arrow!

        Regards.

Oops... must have been the formatting that confused me (with the WHERE statements under each other).

I do believe that the query you wrote is too complex to be dealt with/represented in the query builder, I have had the same problem, and needed to use native syntax instead of portable SQL (which disables the query builder automatically).

No, I've made my tests and the statement is correctly decoded by the genie... it is a problem on the expression field. If it is long enough to make the horizontal movement arrow appear you're on the right way to reproduce the bug. Write by hand a sql statement with a long "where" expression then press the query builder button. At this point, if you go to the filter, clic on the "where" expression field and then clic on the arrow... voil! The "where" expression disappears.

Thanks for your interest on my problem.

Definitely sounds like a bug then, if you submit what you just typed up there as a bug report you'll probably get it sorted within a day or so :)

My database in on a customer server... that's why I use SQL to read its data. it is a FirebirdSQL and I have an ODBC driver to access it. Now I try to retrieve the DDL statements to recreate a clean database for submitting the bug report (you know... privacy concerns) , so I can attach the A5 report and the instructions to regenerate the db in the correct way.

                Thanks.

You're right. I must configure an email account on the virtual machine where I run XP and A5 to send the bug report! :-)

                  Ciao.

Re: Bug on the Query Builder?

If you want to take a look, I've attached the sample converting a couple of tables in MS Access format, so you can open and follow the original instructions to replicate the bug (the problem is when the left expression field name is long, shifting the right expression over the right panel side).

                    Ciao.
