Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to make a class global?

I have two scripts in my test database called main_v1 and main_v2 (see attached sample database).

In main_v1 I define a class for a debug timer and can use it in main_v1. Now I would like to make the class debugTimer also available in main_v2 without copy it to main_v2. In general this should work if I mark the class as GLOBAL.

But no matter what I tried: main_v2 never knows the class and always throws an error.

Can someone please show me how to do this? Btw: I'm looking for a way where I can easily add more global classes (and global functions).

    Thx

    Ray

Try defining your class in code by itself - define it as global

    Code:
    Define class global debugtimer
You can also define it as shared - local is the default

execute that code- that will establish the class.

The you can use it in a DIM statement

    Code:
    Dim mytimer as debugtimer

Re: How to make a class global?

      Tom,

thank you for your answer. I tried your sample but when I run main_v2 it still says: "Script:main_v2 line:5 dim newtimer as debugTimer Type is not defined". So main_v2 still doesn't know global class debugTimer.

Re: How to make a class global?

Ray did you run main_v1 first. That establishes the class. Then run main_v2 and the script should run. It runs fine here (I'm using Version 8) but the classes were not changed in Version 9.

Again run main_v1 first to establish the class.

edit: Sorry Ray, I sent the wrong zip file -you got yours back again - here is the revised one that should have been sent.

          Tom,

your sample database works - thank you so far. But it isn't the solution I was looking for. I need something like an INCLUDE command, that make a one or more class definitions available for multiple scripts. It should work without running a special script first. You see what I mean? I hope you have a solution for me.

          Regards,

why don't you put your class definitions in your autoexec script?

              Ray

Selwyn beat me to it but if you put the class in the autoexec it works fine

              put the following in autoexec

              Code:
              define class global debugTimer
              	dim starttime as T
              	dim stoptime as T

              	function start as V ()
              		starttime = now()
              	end function

              	function stop as V ()
              		stoptime = now()
              	end function

              	function result as N ()
              		result = stoptime - starttime
              	end function
              end class
Then you can use the debugTimer class anywhere in your app.

              Tom

Selwyn is fast - I just read your the e-mail of your postl and he had already responded.

              What other company does that?

                Selwyn, Tom,

"Autoexec script" - yes! This solved my problem! Thank you very much!
