Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Linking Primary Keys to Network Folders.

    Hello again Alpha 5 Experts.

I have a primary key called JobID, also known as Job Number to my users. I'd like to have Alpha 5 create a new folder on my network drive each time a new job is created. I want to name that folder the JobID number in my database. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks,
    Newander

Have you looked in the Help file index under "directory"? This will require xbasic (I think) but it should be pretty easy. If you can't figure it out from what the help file says, come on back and someone will help.

        Hello again,

Ok I see the command that I'll need to use,

        **********************************************************
DIR_CREATE() creates the directory specified by Directory_Name.

        Supported By

Alpha Five Version 5 and Above

        Example

This statement creates a DATA directory within the A_SPORTS directory.

        dir_create("c:\a5\a_sports\data")
        **********************************************************

However, I'll want to base the folder creation on the JobID in my table, can somebody point me towards the right direction on how to store that number then put it in the dir_create("c:\a5\a_sports\data") part of my script?

        Thanks

Well, you aren't telling us quite enough. For example, is a new record only created on a form? Is the user supposed to do it, say with a button after the new record is created? Or is it supposed to be automatic, without the user doing anything except creating the new record?

In any case, one way or another you have define a variable to hold the value for the folder name, get that value from the field in the new record (does the value appear on the form?) and put it in the variable and then put that variable into your dir_create(). But without more information it would be hard get specific about how to proceed.

            Joshua,
Create a session variable say called svJobID

Wherever the script is going to be called from say from a button's OnPush event, set the variable svJobID to equal the current JobID (whatever record in currently in focus)...you can do this with Action Script (AS) choosing "Variables" from the left screen and "Set variable to constant or expression" from the right screen.

Next place the dir_create() function--if using AS then use xBasic-->Inline xBasic. I used the following and you can add whatever different path you need. Note the extra \ at the end...the \ is an escape character and using it to preface another character makes Alpha see the character after it as it as literal...and in this case without the extra \ the last quote would be escaped and would cause the function to fail.

            dir_create("C:\Documents and Settings\Mike\\"+svJobID)

You may very well have figured this out by now...but maybe will help others if not you.
            Mike

you should look at dir_create_recurse(), which is the same as dir_create(), but it automatically creates nested folders.
