Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Is there a way to generate my reports in an XML format?

    Hello again!

I'm wondering if there is a way to get my Alpha 5 to export my reports in XML format so that I can pass them to another program and read them in. Anyone done this before?

    Thanks,
    Newander

You can export a table to XML. In the help file under XML is this.

So you could prepare the data in a table and export.

Or use the search of the messageboard to get some other ideas.

Thanks, I found that but it didn't click in my mind as to how to use it. I'm thinking I need to transfer the records into a temp table then print to XML from there? Let me know if I'm not on the right track.

      Thanks,

That is the right track... (but I let you know anyway ;) even though you only wanted to know if you were not on the right track)

If the data is in only one table you do have this option..
        Fieldnames
Optional. Default = all fields. Comma delimited list of fields to take data from.

          Joshua,
Maybe I didn't catch what you are currently wanting....but your first post and thread title were asking about creating XML from your report. Data from tables would be fairly straightforward as Al has indicated. If you want just the data from your reports converted to XML then would be a bit harder.

It would go something like this I think...

1...Save the report layout as text.

2...Convert the resulting text into either comma, space, or crlf delimitation. (using say file.to_string(), words(), word() ...or even create a crlf with regex_split() )

3...Knowing how many columns you have, this could then be separated and written into an XML format.

I got to the third part and so yes it could be done.

Am sure Al and others will have other ideas---possibly even functions I don't know of???
          Mike

If you just want to get your data out in readable xml, search the Code Archive section of this board for "General XML Output script". The script I wrote will export perfect xml from a single table, or multiple related tables. If multiple tables are exported, it all ends up as one properly structured xml file. I wrote it to overcome the limitations of Alpha's built in xml export function.

If you want you reports sent to xml (I don't think you mean that), then I would search for a generic pdf to xml converter.
