Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Runtime install hangs

I've been trying to install a5v9 Runtime for the past 2 hours. The install hangs with "Skipping file: C:\windows\system32\msscript.ocx".

I found a thread which suggested deleting this file (repeatedly) during the installation. Tried this three times (msscript.ocx keeps on regenerating itself); got to a hopeful looking point where the message now says "COPYING file: C:\windows\system32\msscript.ocx". Went away to cook supper; came back - still stuck on the same message. Had to reboot (again).

I seem to remember this was also a problem with v8 runtime, but I eventually managed to get that one going. I can't get anywhere with v9.

Please can someone help ? (Windows XP Home; I have v9 Platinum and also v8 installed)

    Re: Runtime install hangs

Sorted. It seems to be a case of trial & error, though, managing to delete the msscript.ocx file at exactly the right moment. You will know if you've got it right - the installation completes within seconds of the "Copying file: c:\windows\system32\msscript.ocx" message.

For anyone else getting the same problem, I found that Windows Explorer was much too slow; I used a DOS prompt window instead. Eventually I got lucky.

It would be really nice if this could be fixed for future installation routines !

Pete, was this a runtime or run engine?

It's a runtime, and it's working nicely now. I would really like to see it fixed for future versions - I just know it's going to catch me (and a few others) out again.

          Re: Runtime install hangs

I was ahveing the same problem with V8, here is what I found.

I had no problem on 5 other machines all about the same configeration. All running PSTOOLS spyware with AV. I had just disabled the Intelliguard on them at the time of install and they went fine. Number 6 machine I had the problem on. I just shut down PCTOOLS this time, that removes some of the drivers for it, and then the program installed.
I hope others will find this of help.

          Thanks to all
          Steve

Hmm ... it's still happening (this time with the file scriptEditor.xml). I did disable my PCTools software, but it didn't make any difference.

Any thoughts on what else might be causing this conflict ? (I use McAfee antivirus / firewall, PC Tools Spyware Doctor)

              Bonbon,
If you right click on the pctools spyware on the bottom rt of your screen it shows "SHUT DOWN" This will completely remove PCTOOLS except for your ownership info so you can restart it afterwards. i also believe in a complete shut down of the computer after that to clear all the little operations going on.
              hope that works for you.

                Steve,

Genius ! Thank you for that - it was the reboot after the PCTools shutdown that made the difference. I should know by now ... "have you tried turning it off & on again ?" ...

                Happy new year to all.

I certainly did - it's amazing what you can learn from these documentaries. Some day I hope to take a trip to the top of Big Ben to see the Internet (if the Elders of the Internet grant permission, of course).
