Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

V9 upgrade now gets cannot create lookup error

Since converting from V5 to V9 all of my accounts are suddenly getting this cannot create lookup message. The first field they enter is company name which has a lookup field rule it says go to cust table and bring these fields over. Now on occasion, they get this message saying cannot create lookup (cant see list to choose from). I have not had this error in V5 with same setup, but now everyone is getting it that i have upgraded to V9. I have tried for several days to fix myself, but cannot figure out.. Usually if they kick all users out (NOT EASY TO DO) and reindex, it finds itself again. And sometimes they just wait and it finds itself it isnt all the time, just random, but daily.

I really need help with this, I dont know what to do here, but all my clients are pissed about the V9 upgrades because we keep finding things that dont work now in V9 and this one has them not able to create loads which they do all day long. Please help if you can. I still like the new features in V9, I just need to have all the current ones work too.

    Thanks again.

    Lynda, two ideas for you:

    a) check the release notes to see if this has been mentioned in any of bug fixes since you distributed v9. I don't recall that it has been an issue for others, but checking the release notes is the way to determine if updating to a later build might help.

    b) Zip a complete copy of the database and send to Alpha with a bug report that includes instructions on how to trigger the fault. Use the "Send a Bug Report" option on the Help menu.

If you jumped from vers 5 all the way to vers 9 it may be that you will find it necessary to rebuild certain components using vers 9 itself. There have been a ton of changes and enhancements between these builds.

thanks for your input. are you saying i should re-write the lookups in V9? or would i need to re-create the whole table? I've sent to Alpha as bug also.

Lynda, I can't say for certain. I am recalling situations described in other threads where creating the same sequence in V9 solved issues that were happening when V9 was running forms built with earlier versions. Perhaps others will chime in to confirm or refute the necessity of rebuilding your forms or field rules. You might save yourself a lot of work if you wait for a response from the bug report, too.

no, you should not have to rewrite lookups.

Re: V9 upgrade now gets cannot create lookup error

            Sorry Lynda,

Missed this thread for some reason and need to re-iterate what Tom said. I have had several little problems with forms built in earlier versions as I have upgraded ( and I have done them all since v4.5) so that is my first port of call as soon as I spot a problem in a new version.

In version 8, I started changing the forms (ones that were possible) to MDI dialogs, thus getting rid of the problems.

Now in version 9 I am trying to re-do them in HTML on MDI dialogs which makes for a cleaner look and adds more control (controls on the 'form' can be a percentage of your screen width so they look good on all screens). This is a struggle due to the help file not being fully updated since version 7, and I mostly do it by trial and error and trawling through the 'whats new in version 9'.

Selwyn did, in a private e-mail, say that he would elaborate on anything I needed help on, so
I asked about all the ui_context commands available after v8 and I got back
the ui_context commands are used to create a named context.
when you open toolbars and menus they are opened in a named context.
then when a MDI window looses or regains focus, a5 automatically takes care of hiding or showing the menus and toolbars that are part of the context associated with the MDI window.
this does not give the syntax of each command that the help file should give

Re: V9 upgrade now gets cannot create lookup error

thank youl, i am converting forms now to see if it works.. i have re-written all field rules for both tables related and that has not done it, so i'll try that next...

One question, i am not sure what the MDI dialog forms are... can you explain what you mean, and maybe i'll recreate that way and see how it works. Especially interested in what you mean by "percentage of screen"... if that means i create a form that will enlarge to fit screen - I WOULD LOVE IT! I've never liked that a form created didn't fit to screen, it has always looked "funny" to me.

              Thanks for feedback.

Re: V9 upgrade now gets cannot create lookup error

                Lynda,

An MDI is a Multiple Document Interface, and an MDI Dialog creates a child window that can be opened, minimized and maximized etc and if you have an open windows menu item it gets registered in there.

When you create an MDI dialog window and set it to maximize it will fill your screen, if that dialog contains an HTML form you can set the components on the html form to a percentage width value and as the form resizes so will the component.

A really nice bit is when you create a browse type object in html, the data in a column automatically wraps to the width of the column (which can be a percentage of the page width) then the row of the browse increases to accommodate the data, see attached
