Real Basic "Drop Objects"

Hello Everyone,

Another question, surprise surprise I know.

I'm looking to add a drag and drop feature to my forms. Basically, I'll have a folder created to store all the images, reports, emails and other junk that comes in for a job. I'd like my user to be able to grab that email, excel, picture, etc.. file and drop it onto a form, thus creating it in the folder.

Can Xbasic do this? If so can you guys point me at help file?

I think you & all of us that would like that are out of luck. You may be able to do that but I think you would have to do a lot of coding to make it work.

Ahh, that's too bad, I can work around having that capability but it sure would have been helpful.

It takes some coding, but not a lot.

Instead of dropping the file on the form, drop the file in a directory and have the file processed from there.

1. On the form fetch event set a global variable to contain the current records unique id field.

2. Build a watch process to monitor the directory for new files. Use the global variable as the indicator of what record to link to.

3. Add to the windows right click option to move a file to the monitored directory. Or print to that directory in a file format like pdf, txt, jpg, or xls.

Al, I have been working on your suggestion, but I don't think I understand how FILE.WATCH_CREATE() function works. Here is my setup...

file.watch_create("dropzone", "c:\dropzone", "F", "file_dropped()")

file_dropped() gets called for every file dropped on "c:\dropzone". If I drop 2 fiiles on "c:\dropzone", file_dropped() gets called twice. The problem is that file_dropped() doesn't seem to get any information about the files that were added to "c:\dropzone". Is there anyway to pass parameters/information to "file_dropped()? If I can know which file(s) were dropped I could move them to my working directory based on the global variable.

To find the name of the most recently created file use FILEFIND.GET().

Use the filefind.get() or filefind.first() on the directory that is being watched to get the names of the files. You can choose to process all of the files that are found or let each call process the first file that it finds. The watch process is very fast....

Then move the file to another directory and continue the processing... like you stated.
