Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Extract_String()

    Hello All,

    I am using the http_get_page_2() function to fill the value of a variable named "Source".

    The following is the part of the returned page that I am interested in parsing.

    Code:
    <tr><td align=left><span class="heading">Principal Address</span></td></tr>
    <tr><td class="data">2964 AVIATION AVE<br>
    MIAMI FL 33133-6522 </td></tr>
    Next, I want to extract "2964 AVIATION AVE", "MIAMI", "FL" and "33133-6522" into individual components for insertion into fields within my table.

    I have tested the extract_string function in an attempt to parse the "2964 AVIATION AVE" element, but it simply returnes an empty character string of "".

    Here's the code I used...

    Code:
    extract_string(source,">Principal Address</span></td></tr><tr><td class=\"data\">","<br>")
    Note: Forcing the variable "source" to equal the entire string without any CR/LF and then using extract_string returns the desired result.

    I suspect that extract_string() is hanging up on the CR/LF in the page's source, but I'm not sure how to overcome this.

    Any assistance will be most appreciated.

    Kindest Regards,

    Louis

    Re: Extract_String()

    Code:
    txt=<<%txt%
    #<tr><td align=left><span class="heading">Principal Address</span></td></tr>
    #<tr><td class="data">2964 AVIATION AVE<br>
    #MIAMI FL 33133-6522 </td></tr>%txt%
    ?extract_string(txt,"a\">","<",1)
    = "2964 AVIATION AVE"

    ?extract_string(txt,"<br>"+crlf(),"</td",1)
    = "MIAMI FL 33133-6522 "

      Using your same expression with slight modification:
      Code:
      Source=<<%txt%
      #<tr><td align=left><span class="heading">Principal Address</span></td></tr>
      #<tr><td class="data">2964 AVIATION AVE<br>
      #MIAMI FL 33133-6522 </td></tr>%txt%
      ?extract_string(source,">Principal Address</span></td></tr>"+crlf()+"<tr><td class=\"data\">","<br>")
      = "2964 AVIATION AVE"

        Re: Extract_String()

        Gabe,

        Thanks for your replies.

        I think I'm beginning to see what you are doing, but I'm not so sure this is going to work for me. I need to parse the address information from a website.

        Here's some code that successfully writes the contents of the web page to a variable named source...

        Code:
        Dim Corp_Name as c
        Corp_Name="GROVE PLACE CONDOMINIUM ASSOCIATION, INC."
        Dim Doc_Num as c
        Doc_Num="N39200"
        Dim source as c
        source = http_get_page2("http://www.sunbiz.org/scripts/cordet.exe?action=DETFIL&inq_doc_number="+Doc_Num+"&inq_came_from=NAMFWD&cor_web_names_seq_number=0000&names_name_ind=N&names_cor_number=&names_name_seq=&names_name_ind=&names_comp_name="+Corp_Name+"&names_filing_type=")
        Now, from this point, how do I use extract_string() to parse the individual elements from the variable "source"?

        Thanks

        Louis

          Re: Extract_String()

          Hi Louis,

          There is a very good example by Dr Peter Wayne on Screen Scraping that goes into a lot of detail.

          Hope this helps.

                Not extract_string() but using the string scanner object instead.
                Code:
                ss = stringscanner.Create(source)

                ss.SkipToString(">Principal Address<")
                ss.SkipToString("data\">")
                ss.SkipoverString("data\">")
                addr = ss.ScanToString("<br>")
                ss.SkipOverString("<br>")
                txt = ss.ScanToString("</td>")

                txt = alltrim(stritran(txt,crlf()))

                city = word(txt,1," ",w_count(txt)-2)
                state = word(txt,-2)
                zip = word(txt,-1)

                ?addr
                = "2964 AVIATION AVE"

                ?city
                = "MIAMI"

                ?state
                = "FL"

                ?zip
                = "33133-6522"

                  Re: Extract_String()

                  Just hit your variable source with these two functions, then use your same extract code, but without consideration for the quotation marks.

                  source = stritran(source,"\"")
                  source = stritran(source,crlf())

                    Keith...Thanks for the additional reference.

                    Tim...Never used strings scanner before...didn't even know it existed, but it looks very interesting. I will read up on it, I'm sure I'll be able to use it in the future.

                    Steve...BINGO...you hit the nail on the head. Short, sweet and it works.

                    Thank you all for your assistance.
