Re: read past end of file error message
Selwyn, thanks for the education.
Tom, thanks for taking the time to look at the problem.
I will be more careful in the future about telling A5 what to do with the dictionaries.

The Alpha Software Forum Participation Guidelines
The Alpha Software Forum is a free forum created for Alpha Software Developer Community to ask for help, exchange ideas, and share solutions. Alpha Software strives to create an environment where all members of the community can feel safe to participate. In order to ensure the Alpha Software Forum is a place where all feel welcome, forum participants are expected to behave as follows:
Be sure all comments and threads you post are respectful. Posts that contain any of the following content will be considered a violation of your agreement as a member of the Alpha Software Forum Community and will be moderated:
If a thread or post is found to contain any of the content outlined above, a moderator may choose to take one of the following actions:
Moderators may also rename posts and threads if they are too generic or do not property reflect the content.
Moderators may move threads if they have been posted in the incorrect forum.
Threads/Posts questioning specific moderator decisions or actions (such as "why was a user banned?") are not allowed and will be removed.
The owners of Alpha Software Corporation (Forum Owner) reserve the right to remove, edit, move, or close any thread for any reason; or ban any forum member without notice, reason, or explanation.
Community members are encouraged to click the "Report Post" icon in the lower left of a given post if they feel the post is in violation of the rules. This will alert the Moderators to take a look.
Alpha Software Corporation may amend the guidelines from time to time and may also vary the procedures it sets out where appropriate in a particular case. Your agreement to comply with the guidelines will be deemed agreement to any changes to it.
Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting
Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.
When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.
The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.
When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.
A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.
If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.
When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.
Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

If a thread or post is found to contain any of the content outlined above, a moderator may choose to take one of the following actions:

Re: read past end of file error message
Don, I guess I do, too, even though I thought I knew my way around them pretty well. Did not see this as the source of the problem, and misinterpreted the "read past end of file" error message. -- tom

I obviously need to educate myself on dictionaries because I currently know very little about them. I will do some reading over the week-end.
Thanks again.
dictionaries are the .ddd, .ddm and .ddx files. every table has a dictionary.
in the case of sets, the dictionaries are the .set, .sem and .sex files.
the dictionaries are really just a5 tables (i.e. the .ddd or .set is equivalent to the .dbf, the .ddm or .sem is equivalent to the .fpt (where memos are stored), and the .ddx or .sex is equivalent to the .cdx (i.e. the indexes).
all of the 'objects' (i.e. forms, reports, labels, letters, operations, field rules, etc.) for a table are stored in its dictionary.
that's good and bad. its good, because if you copy a table and its dictionary, you get everthing - all of the forms and reports, and operations associated with that table.
its 'bad' in the sense that if you delete a table's dictionary, a lot of stuff is getting deleted.

I am using Alpha5 version 9 Premium.
When I try to research "Read past end of File" on the forum it gives me an error message that I am not using the minimum count of 3 words?
your copy Operation is set to overrite pre-existing dictionaries. edit the Copy operation, click the 'Copy Settings...' button and turn off this option.
it will then work.
when you overwrite the existing dictionary, you delete everything in the dictionary (which includes the Subtract operation that you previously defined).
so when you try to run the subtract operation, it is no longer there.
you would have seen that it was not there had you pressed the Refresh button on the toolbar.

That is exactly what is happening to me.

Re: read past end of file error message
Don, it's not necessary after all. I am able to replicate the error you're seeing. Here are the steps I take:
a) define new subtract operation
b) run it (all is well)
c) populate the Forecast PN BOM table using a copy operation
d) populate the Forecast PN INV table using a copy operation
e) re-run the subtract operation - get the read past end of file error message

Tom - It is on my laptop at home. I will re-send the zip file later today. (I have tried this operation on 3 pc's and get the same error on each one.) Thanks again.

Re: read past end of file error message
Don, there are no SUBTRACT operations defined in the sample you posted. Suggest you test your upload on a second machine before posting. Will help you see what we'll see later on.

Don, I couldn't find anything in the zip but one unknown file--no adb, no dbf, etc.

Re: read past end of file error message
I give up. I am still trying to substract FORECAST PART_NO BOM from FORECAST PART_NO INV and get a result table of FORECAST PN RESULT. The operation name is FORECAST PN DELTA. The operation works good with no error until I re-run operation FORECAST PN BOM (refreshes table FORECAST PART_NO BOM) and operation FORECAST PN INV (refreshes table FORECAST PART_NO INV). After I run these two operations and then re-run FORECAST PN DELTA again, I get a "Read past end of File" error message.
After I get this error message and exit and then re-enter A5, the operation FORECAST PN DELTA is no longer in the data base. It just disappears.
If you go to Forms, Main Menu, Inventory Management, and select Inventory forecast report another error for this operation will show a "script: onpush: line 65" error. I looked at the xbasic code behind the substract operation but there is no onpush command.
I have attached the database so you can dublicate the problem. After you get the error you will have to reconstruct the operation because it no longer works.
Thanks again.
