Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Field reference in scripts

    I have a tabbed control (Tabbed1) on a form (frmMFA). I have a script which runs on the OnPush event of Button1 which is on the frmMFA. I am trying to add several fields on on of the tab pages from Tabbed1.

    mobility = move1 + move2 + move3 (etc)

    mobility is a field defined in table MFA
    move1, move2, move3 are also fields in table MFA and are represented by radio1, radio2 and radio3 field controls on frmMFA

    When the script runs, it tells me that it can't find variable move1. I also tried to use radio1, which is the form control representing move1 field.

    What am I screwing up? I have looked in help, but haven't been able to find what I am looking for.

    Thanks

    Re: Field reference in scripts

    David, you can (A) reference the field values in the underlying tables, or (B) reference the properties of the objects in the form layout that display those values. The syntax is different depending upon which way you want to do this. Suggest you post a working copy of the database here.

    The error message is signaling that the script is not recognizing "move1" as a table field, and thinks it's a variable. Since it can't find a variable with that name, it throws the error.

    Later...

    Here's an example illustrating the two different techniques. Unzip to an empty directory.

      Re: Field reference in scripts

      David, I've modified the script in the button that computes the total using values read directly from the field objects on the form. The change is at the end of the script. There's no reason to refresh the display of the field object itself since the script assigns the text string directly to the object. The modified database is attached.

        As always, you have come through again. Thank you. I was trying to use the "incomplete" address type and it didn't work. Using the t. pointer makes it work.

        In Visual Basic, you can identify a clause like this:

        With t

        move1 = 12
        move2 = 13

        end with

        This takes the hassle out of typing t. with every field on the form. Is there a way to do it in Alpha?

          Alpha has the END...END WITH structure but I can't say if it behaves the same as in VB. Quick reading of the help file indicates that maybe it's a different animal.

            Indeed... and it is exactly the same, as a quick search in the online help shows: http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...._end_with.htm
