Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Electronic filing

    As an Alpha rookie, I'm always concerned as to the sensibility of my queries... I would like to put a column in a browse that would display a Word or Excel or tiff icon etc. Clicking on the icon would then open a specific file, relevant to that particular browse row. Can I easily do this? Thanks in advance, Larry Gordon

    Yep, that is easily done. Check out this from the help file.

      Jeff
      Many thanks - it works fine. I used the new V9 Form Browse controls to create a Generic Action button and then entered the SYS_OPEN command and appropriate path and file name.

      What I should also have asked in my original question, is how do I allow the end user to upload his chosen path and file name into the button's script?

      Kind regards
      Larry

        Store the path and file name in table fields. Allow the user to modify them. Make the script reference the table fields' contents.
        There can be only one.

          Right along with what Stan said.....this is a snippet of code I use to get part way there. After this you can just set the field contents to vsourcefilename and you should be set.

          Code:
          Dim vsourcefilename as C
          vsourceFileName = ui_get_file("Pick a file to load.", "*.*",alltrim(gvrefdocsrcdir)+"*.*", "X")
          'If Source is blank then end
          if (sourceFileName = "") then
              end
          end if

            Once again I am overawed by the level of help and support that I receive from the Alpha world. I sincerely hope that by the time my own posts get into three figures that I too will be able to help some other unfortunate alpha rookie in the manner in which I have been helped.
            Kind regards

              Hi Larry

              Glad I could help.

              I agree with you......this board in unbelievable in how much help is available here and the willingness at which it is given! Just look at the number of posts by Stan Mathews and Tom Cone!

                Hi Jeff - I'm partway there! I now have a button in a browse which references a field in an adjacent column in the same row, which contains a path and filename. On pushing the button the appropriate file is opened.

                I think that your code is going to allow me to select the file and path to display in that field, but I'm not cetain - this would be excellent! But I have so far failed to get it working. Can you please advise me as to where I should place your code, as I think this may be my problem. I was thinking of adding another button which would allow selection of the appropriate path and file.

                Kind regards

                Larry

                  Hi Larry,
                  Your problem with Jeff's script could be what I have in red.
                  Code:

                  Dim vsourcefilename as C
                  vsourceFileName = ui_get_file("Pick a file to load.", "*.*",alltrim(gvrefdocsrcdir)+"*.*", "X")
                  'If Source is blank then end
                  [COLOR=red]if (sourceFileName = "")[/COLOR] then
                      end
                  end if
                  I think it maybe should be
                  Code:

                  Dim vsourcefilename as C
                  vsourceFileName = ui_get_file("Pick a file to load.", "*.*",alltrim(gvrefdocsrcdir)+"*.*", "X")
                  'If Source is blank then end
                  if [COLOR=red]v[/COLOR][COLOR=blue]sourceFileName = ""[/COLOR] then
                      end
                  end if
                  Add the "v" in front and take out parenthesis.

                  Hope I'm right!
                  Mike
