Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Record Locked By Another User or Session?

Today I have started receiving a Record Locked by Another User or Session notice on two fields on a form.

The fields are from a parent table of a set and have nothing to do with the linking field.

    Here is the set up:

I have a table called workouts. In this table I have two fields: "class" and "subclass"

Both fields have table lookups set up under field rules.

Class uses the table "class" for its lookup and subclass uses the table "subclass" for its lookup.

If I open the default form for the set that uses the workouts table as its parent, the fields give me the notice.

If i open the default form for the workouts table I do not get the notice on the fields.

If I open the default browse for the set, the fields to not give me the notice either.

I have also tried to create new fields with different table lookups and I get the same notice.

I have also changed the form field properties of the fields to combo boxes (after removing the table lookup field rules) and set the choices to Computed Automatically and then the assigned the tables and fields and get the notice.

I have a one user license of A5v9 and this is for a desktop app so I know that another instance of A5 is not running. I have also checked the database information after closing the form and the tables are not open.

There are not scripts that open the tables when the form opens (as it is the default form)

    I am lost once again!

I have searched the forum and cannot find anything to help me out.

I have stripped the db down to the default form (renamed to Workouts) and tables necassary to duplicate the problem.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for your help.

it looks like it might be a bug, but there is a trivial work around.

in your set definition, you have turned on referential integrity. if you turn that off, then it will work correctly.

i suspect that the problem is that when you have referential integrity turned on, a5 has to lock more tables and it is locking that it might not need to.

on further reflection, i am not at all sure that there is a bug here.

i think that the problem might be your set definition (which I will admit makes no sense to me).

you have a parent table and two child tables. However both child tables are the same physical table linked on the exact same fields.

while it is not uncommon for a set to link in the same physical table more than once, the linking fields for each linked instance would be different.

however, in your case, they are identical, so i don't understand the point of having a complete duplicate child link.

but since you do have a duplicate child link, and because you have ref integrity, a5 puts a lock on the first child table, and then tries to put a lock on the second child table (and this fails, because the second child table is acutually the same as the first child table).

Re: Record Locked By Another User or Session?

        Selwyn,
The "strange" child table set up was suggested to me by somebody on this message board about 8 months ago.

The reason was this: I have an embedded browse on my workout form that shows all exercises for the workout. The fields in the browse are from the child table.

When I would navigate from child record to child record, the browse would always move the active child record to the top of the browse and hide any child records listed before the active child record.

I did not want this and wished for the browse to always show all child records (ie exercises) for the current parent record (or workout).

Somebody suggested that I add the second instance of the child table as I did.

There has been no problem with record locking until now.

          Hi Selwyn,

I tend to agree that it is not a bug. What you have is a many-to-many relationship (e.g. inventory items linked to a invoice's line items). If you have referential integrity on, then that inventory item is locked, and no one else can use an invoice that use's the same inventory item while the 1st is in change mode.

What we have here is essentially a many-to-many with referential integrity on confined within one user and one set, an odd occurence indeed.

Basic rule I tell people is that if more than one parent record can share the same children (or grandchildren etc), then referential integrity to that child must be turned off. Thus, go back to the invoice example, two parents can share use of the same inventory item's entry.

Re: Record Locked By Another User or Session?

I just had a lightbulb go on over my head!!!

I had inadvertantly changed the referential integrity of the second instance of the child table in the set to cascade changes. I do not know why I did this but I did.

I changed it to "none" and it works.

Thanks for the help. One day I hope to know enought to stop making these rookie mistakes:)

Me too! But then I've only been using Alpha products since about 1991. If you aren't making mistakes, you aren't learning anything.
