Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Unrecoverable Error

I note that this topic has been discussed previously but I cannot locate any satisfactory conclusion. In my case, the problem has started since I downloaded the latest V9 Desktop patch.

The error message is: "Unrecovearble Error. Unhandled Exception (Access Violation - the thread tried to read from or write to a virtual address for which it does not have the appropriate access). Alpha 5 will do a forced termination".

The A5 Runtime and program are located on my C drive, with the data on a MS 2003 small business server, along with 3 other Run Time users, who experience the same problem. A5 is shutting down after amending just 5 or 6 records.

I was also experiencing "Error addin'Startup a5 controls' on startup again, (again since latest patch and only in V9) but got over this by manually registering the files in regsvr32.exe as previously instructed.

    Kind regards

    Re: Unrecoverable Error

Well Larry, no responses to your "question"??

Maybe because a specific one was not asked.

If it is verification of a patch problem then state this, maybe giving an example for others to test.

Oh yeah...did you roll back to make sure it was the latest update that is causing a problem?

Do all your users have the same version running? (which can cause problems if not)

I am simply trying to elicit more information from you and bring the thread back to the top for another shot at obtaining a solution if that is what is wanted.
    Mike

      Re: Unrecoverable Error

      Hi Mike
Thanks for the comments, and you are of course correct in that I did not ask a specific question. In the meantime I have also joined a thread on the Server message board where Gary Fletcher (Graysarge) and several others have been discussing the same error. Gary's comments to me were:

      "Larry...
I have had it confirmed by Alpha that the memory leak does exist and that they hope to get it fixed. That was many weeks ago and I do not know the current status"

There was another mistake in my previous post: it is in fact only two of my PC's that get the error - the other two function perfectly. They are all on the same Alpha versions. We are now searching their individual memory settings for anomolies.

I was panicking last week as I was experiencing a number of issues all at once i.e. the unrecoverable error, an MDAC/Import malfunction, error messages on leaving Alpha, the inability to open new forms, issues with scrolling, browse buttons ceasing to function etc... As a newbie I was coming to the conclusion that perhaps I should not have ventured into the deep end of the pool so soon! Anyway, apart from the unrecoverable errors, its all mostly patched and fixed since last week.
      Kind regards
      Larry

        XP Home
        Sp2
        2.00GHz, 1.00 GB ram

After downloading patch 1600-3196 today I am getting, for the first time, the same Unrecoverable Error message.

        Not only that but:

        1. Enter a new record from a drop down lookup not going to the form I specified in field rules..

        2. Exit the form back to the Control Panel Tables tried to Design Field Rules system frozen i.e. not opening any field rules for any tables.

Rolled back to patch 1581-3193 and all is working well.

        Regards

        Alan

            Afternoon Keith,

I am finishing a project using build 1581-3193 and I won't use the latest patch until that's finished, 2 days. I'll then try to repeat the problems I reported with the new patch using Alpha Sports.

            Regards

            Alan

I am using 3193 and I am getting this same error intermittently so I am not sure it is patch related

                Re: Unrecoverable Error

having this same type of issue - especially the "access violation" error that boots alpha completely. any "final" fix to this problem? How do you "roll" back to a previous patch... and shouldn't alpha fix in a new patch, so we aren't missing some of the "good" fixes in current patches..

Still a novice to some extent, so i'm at a loss at how to figure this out and how to fix..

                  Hi Lynda,

Which patch do you have now? And, which patch do you want to roll back to?

                    Re: Unrecoverable Error

Over the past two months I have made some positive progress with the 'Unrecoverable Error'. Two of my PC's were well behind with Microsoft critical updates and indeed were running XP with Service Pack 2. Now that all my PC's are on Service Pack 3, I only occasionally experience the problem. I have also instigated a procedure of downloading MS updates (and Alpha updates) every Friday. Coincidence or not, the problem is 90% eradicated from my network.
