Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Getting Error Message

    To All:
    Sometimes users get error message
    ENTER MUST BEGIN FIRST.
Form is based on set with header and detail
Seems to happen when Indexes get corrupted.

After all users exit application and ddd maintenance is run on the header and detail, it seems to correct itself.

I think it is an index probles rather than checking for table mode.

Anybody have any ideas on best way to prevent

    Thanks

    Re: Getting Error Message

Do you really need someone to tell you that you need to find and fix the index problem that is causing the corruption? It is not a normal situation to have the index problems you mention.

There have been any number of posts over the years on the subject. Some have suggested checking the network hardware, some dealt with problems with filtered indexes. etc.

      Re: Getting Error Message

      Stan:
      Not Really
I only have 1 index(sheetno) in the header a 1 or 2 indexes in the detail(sheetno and empnum)
      set is linked by sheetno
      pretty straight forward.
It seems like Alpha is creating additional temporary indexes based on other sets and reports using these tables.

I am more interested in the Error message.
      Enter Must begin First.

That message is not in the help file.
I would expect to see something like that if the table was not in the correct mode.
Can an index problem cause that message or is there something else.

        Re: Getting Error Message

        Charlie,

If you mean that a full explanation of what has occurred to trigger the error message is not in the help files, I agree, but there are many errors reported thusly.

I'm taking a wild guess here but if I saw

        Enter Must begin First.

I would assume that something had happened to make Alpha think an <tbl>.enter_end() was being issued without being preceeded by the necessary <tbl>.enter_begin().

If you don't code in xbasic it may be that the code behind an action script has been corrupted, if that is possible.

With your described indexes not likely to be the problem I would try a hardware diagnosis. If one user is on the system does the problem occur, two users, three users? What are the users doing when the indexes become corrupted. You may need to implement some audit trail features to track it down.
        There can be only one.

          Re: Getting Error Message

Charlie, I recommend you search the message board for "Enter Must Begin First", being sure to include the quotes. You'll find that others have bumped into this before and in most cases there were errors in the data entry sequences or field rules that were the culprit. Here's but one example among many:
