Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Considering A5V9 - couple questions.

I am considering A5V9 and have a couple of questions that I can't find specific answers for on the website.

    1. Can you run standard SQL commands against native dbf tables?

    2. Can you access Visual Foxpro tables using the VFP ODBC driver?

    3. How flexible is the reporting system? We are in the habit of doing very sophisticated reports with the report writer built in to VFP; however, we are not using the VFP Version 9 report writer because of some delay issues when printing to a local parallel printer.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi John,

I would just like to answer "3. How flexible is the reporting system?" with a very simple answer. Very Flexible.

I have have seen some very clever reports built with Alpha.

It all depends on what you mean by flexible.

If the data is on the system then it can used in a report. Plus all the other little tricks of displaying calculated fields and fields conditionally.

In the first place there is plenty of help here, and I know I've had plenty of it.

      Thanks for the reply Keith.

I guess by flexible, I mean groupings, calculations, conditional printing, etc. Plus, in Visual Foxpro, we use a third party tool called XFRX that allows you to print your reports to a variety of different formats, Word, Excel (although this doesn't work as nice as we would like), ASCII, and PDF. It also allows you to append reports to a single PDF file, for example.

When I look at applications, the first thing I like to look at are the reports that are generated; consequently, our reports tend to be over the top when it comes to data. As long as we can do an SQL to get the data grouped properly and the report writer handles the basics, I think we'll be ok.

        V9 has

        for printing to a file.
        There can be only one.

          Hi John,

Please see thumbnails of two recent reports both from the same application.

Showing reports like this only shows the finished result, which is what they are intended to do, from your point of view the interest would be on how they are constructed.

I think they demonstrate flexibility. Between them they contain all the elements you mentioned.

Yes, I've looked at some of the documentation for the report writer and it looks very capable. Combined with your sample report, I think we're finding A5V9 to be a very good alternative to our current development tool.
