Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

More than one embedded browse, displaying records question

    Good day,

Refer to the attached small A5 database. Containing the following 3 tables (all 1 too many): company, store, division.

    Question:
How can create an embedded browse on a form showing the companies, and in another embedded browse (on the same form) display all the divisions for the selected company? Currently I can almost achieve this by adding the embedded browse for the stores, but that is NOT what I want to do.

I want to show all the divisions for the selected company.

    Looking forward to your insight.

    Kind regards
    George

Re: More than one embedded browse, displaying records question

George, your set is arranged parent, child, grandchild. You want to display all the grandchildren (in a browse object) for each parent. Consider using a new set, in which the grandchildren are linked to the parent table as children (not as grandchildren).

Re: More than one embedded browse, displaying records question

      Hi George,

Does the Company have many Divisions and each Division have many Stores?

Or as you have built your Set, the Company has many Stores and each Store has many Divisions (Departments).

What about, does each Division sell many Items?

      Is this correct?

Tom is right, but you will have to have a link field in the Stores table that will hold both Comp_Id and Store_Id (calculated) that will be the link to the Divisions table.

Now you will be able to link the Divisions table back to the Company with an Expression that is the part of the link = Comp_Id.

You will need to think vary carefully how you are going to do data entry.

How would you enter a new Store to a Company or a New Division in a Store?

Re: More than one embedded browse, displaying records question

        Gentleman, thanks for responding.

The attached example (database) and the customer -> store -> division relationship are merely to try and figure out a concept and not really the system which I am experiencing the challenge with.

The question is in the context of displaying the data, and not capturing.

The concept which I need to understand is how can I display an embedded browse (companies) on a form, and in another embedded browse show all the divisions for that company. The tables and their data already exist, but if I have to change the table layout I will.

        Kind regards
        George

          Hi George,

          Have a look at attached.

As Tom has said you need to link the Divisions to Company and the only way you can do that is to have matching values in linking fields.

See form Divisions. See Set structure form is based on. See how Link field carries Comp_id from Stores.

If you are not going to add any new stores or divisions then simply add a new field to Divisions Comp_Id and post Values from Stores.

            Keith,

Thanks for the effort so far, and your patience.

I receive an error message when I open the form Divisions, see attached pic.

            What am I doing wrong?

            Kind regards

              Hi George,

You did nothing wrong, it was me. I deleted a field.

              Try this attachment.
