Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 Flakey???

For the second time this week A5 has flaked out on me. Being a new user, this has, by no means, instilled confidence, in the product. Is anyone else seeing this stuff? I'm working under Vista Ultimate

Earlier this week I was trying to get a UI_Bitmap_Draw working... at one point A5 stopped responding. I had to user End Task to shut it down. When I opened Alpha5 the form I was working was corrupt.

Yesterday, I was working on routines to detach the tables and attach them again. I left the app and form open overnight. This morning, the form looked as I left it - 3 buttons... I saved and closed it. When I re-opened it... the 2 buttons with the attach and detach routines were gone. What the....!!!

      Re: A5 Not Flakey

I think... but I need to understand it's behaviour better. In detaching and attachd tables, it seems that this has had an effect on the forms and whether they show up... or not.

I created a new form... detached my tables and attached the same set of tables from another folder. My new form is not longer in the list of forms.

Going to see why now.... this doesn't really make sense.

        So... I don't understand how A5 works.

I thought the Forms belonged to the App. Why does dropping tables, and then adding tables from another location cause forms to "stick" to the new data location. Anyone know what A5 is doing?

        Thanks,

        David

          Re: A5 Flakey???

A5 is behaving correctly. The form is associated with the table (or set). If you drop the table or set, the form will go with it. Loading a copy of the table or set from another location won't bring the form with it.

          If you have this:
          c:\mydata\customer.dbf

You'll also have the associated data dictionary that contains the form:
          c:\mydata\customer.ddd
          c:\mydata\customer.ddm
          c:\mydata\customer.ddx

          If you drop this:
          c:\mydata\customer.dbf

          And then add back this:
          c:\myOTHERdata\customer.dbf

then you're going to get the data dictionary that's in
          c:\myOTHERdata

          make sense?

Makes perfect sense. Detaching a table detaches its support files as well. The form was created for the detached table. It does not exist for any other table.

It might be possible to have separate .dbf (and .cdx and .fpt) files with the same name that you could drop into the application folder. If each table (.dbf) as the same structure then one form would work for any.
            There can be only one.

David, mastering the Alpha Five file types is key. Check the help file discussion:

Check the help file topic "Alpha Five File Types".

Understanding where layouts, scripts, functions, and security settings are stored is necessary if you're going to be using scripts that dynamically alter your application by attaching and detaching tables or sets.

Thanks Guys... I better brush on on file types and understand where everything is held.

I believe my need to attach and detach tables will still work... just need to ensure that the folder copies of files are current copies of the right types of files.... I think.
