Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Subreport and Include Record from Parent Table option

    I have searched the forums and have not found any mention of this problem. There si a lot of posts regarding subreports based on two tables linked to the same customer but not for the problem that I have. So if there is such a post please refer me to it please.

    The Structure
    ---------------
    I would like to print a report based on a set with the following (1:M) relationship. Customer linked to Division and points_purchased at the same time:
    customer
    ->division
    ->enduser
    ->license
    ->transactions
    ->points_purchased

    The report will print in that hierarchy, the transactions for each license and sum the totals. This works fine.

    I would also like to print the points purchased with totals by the customer at the end of the report (I will at this stage only print one customer at a time).
    So in order to add the points_purchased totals to the report I added a subreport with the structure that I need.

    The Problem
    --------------
    I am in a catch 22 for what I am trying to achieve.

    If the report is based on a set with the "Include record from parent table" option to "Always - even if no matching child records exists" then the sub report displays correctly but I get a few lines at the beginning of the report that is not related at all.

    If the report is based on a set with the "Include record from parent table" option to "Only if matching child record DOES exist" then the lines at the beginning is gone but the sub report does not display the details of the points_purchased items.

    I have attached a sample database(Username:Administrator and Password:master) with two reports to print.
    1) View Report All - Based on set where parent record printed regardless.
    2) View Report distinct - Only print parent record if child exist.

    If anyone can shed some light on this problem I will be most grateful.

    I see the spaces were truncated for the hierarchy. The customer is linked (1:M) to the division and points_purchased. The rest of the tables will be linked to division as follows. division->enduser->license->transactions.

      Hi Marius,

      I have seen your report and it does look very complex.

      I have unfortunately not grasped what you are trying to achieve.

      The question is, do you need all the tables in the set for the data that is being used in the report?

      Other things to consider: Create a temp table, and populate that with data from summarized tables.

      Just a passing thought.

        Hi Keith,

        Thanks for the reply.

        The only table that I do not need in the report is the Transactions table as I roll those values up to the License table.

        How will I go about doing it the Temp table way? I will still have the problem where I need to display the points_purchased detail lines at the end of the report.

        I will try an example and see if it works.

        Thanks Keith

          Re: Subreport and Include Record from Parent Table option

          Hi Marius,

          So, to start with build another set without the Transactions table. See what that does for you.

          Anther thing to look at is conditional controls and calculated fields.

          I'm sure you can do what you want but in a simpler fashion.

          If the data is available then you will get the desired report.
