Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Shadow Refresh - not

Got a customer that just upgraded from V8 to V9 - been using the networked app now for 10 years.

Just tried to get a few changes to the shadowed workstations, but not having much luck. Couple of field rules for one table, a form change for that table, and changes in two sets.

If we use V9 Platinum directly with the files on the server, all is well - the database and these specific changes behave as we want.

So, run a shadow refresh to the workstations, and no effect. It's as if we didn't make the refresh.

So, copy by hand the correct files from the server to a workstation. Success - worked as expected.

Next, copy by hand to another workstation. No success. Might well have done nothing.

I'm outta ideas as to why:

    1) A standard shadow refresh apparently isn't doing the job; and

    2) Even copying files by hand apparently doesn't always work.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks!

    Re: Shadow Refresh - not

Did you refresh by setting a higher version number and let it refresh automatically on next logon or by a "forced" refresh (Tools > Refresh Shadow)?

      Re: Shadow Refresh - not

We run a forced refresh with my own UDF that's worked well for years.

Bigger puzzle yet is why hand-copying the files through Windows Explorer didn't produce the results on Workstation #2 (Got 38 more to go....)

        Re: Shadow Refresh - not

Suggest you try the "Tools->Refresh" to do it "by the book".

Bear in mind that a straight copy of the files to a workstation does not work as you need to attach to the data on the server, but I am sure you already know this as you state "copy by hand the correct files from the server".

As you use a UDF, it could be this that we as outsiders cannot help with.

          Re: Shadow Refresh - not

Steve, in V8 I recently began having an issue, where say I add a table or new report for an existing table, and do a normal refresh (letting Alpha do it,) the new table and/or report is not available. But, if they close the program and reopen it is then available. In my case, I think it has to do with the application size - over 400 tables. Like I hit a limit, or something. Anyway, this info may or may not relate to your scenario.

            Thanks.

Garry - I, and others, discovered a long time ago that for unknown unrepeatable reasons, the standard tool didn't work. So we rolled our own. It's just a copy of the *.dd*, *.s*, *.al* files. Just checked - my function was last edited in 2003, worked fine ever since.

Martin - an important point I've asked the cust: did he restart. But he's been doing this all along, so knows the ropes well. Just 70 tables and 28 sets in this database.

              Re: Shadow Refresh - not

Knowing you Steve and your vast experience I assume you ensured that the additional workstations are mapped to the server folder in exactly the same way ??
I too have experienced problems when adding tables to a database and or amending field rules and then finding that a version number driven update did not properly update the shadow.
I can think of no reason why a manual copy of the shadow folder from one machine to another would not work given as stated above the folders and drive mappings etc are the same.
One time I did have trouble was when I tried to shadow a system only to find that the My Documents folder that Alpha used by default was in fact a shared folder on the server thus destroying the benefits of shadowing. I usually try and shadow to a folder on the root of a workstation so that you know it will be there regardless of who logs on to the work station.

                Re: Shadow Refresh - not

Well, it's turning out that the main problem here was probably due to miscommunication about problems/solutions/expectations between me and my customer. He's been my customer for about 12 years now so we generally understand each other well, but like any couple that's been together that long, one of us (I think me) missed some details.

Anyway, thanks. At least it's not my programmers' skills. My wife has long held that my listening skills were weak...

How would the wife know? I always thought the key to a successful marriage was to ignore what the wife says and just keep saying, "Yes Dear."

                    Steve,

Doesn't this sound like a similar post you had a while back on this subject? If I remember correctly, in that case you had a bogus (or not) cdx file in the shadow directory.

I'm probably the last to give advice but, I have had some unexplained problems with shadows in the past and the only way I solved them was to delete the shadow and rebuild it from scratch. I did not see that this was one of the things you tried. Sometimes, I notice that refreshing doesn't work but rebuilding does.
