Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    mixing shadows and T/S

My reasoning is that there would be nothing wrong with mixing shadows and T/S. The reason for the possibility is that I have a system where I have up to 20 users who will use the app periodically, but only 5 heavy lifters. So I would like to put the 5 on T/S to boost performance, but leave the rest on regular shadow copies. We have XP pro w/s's and 2003 server.

Does anyone knbow if there are hidden problems with this.

    Re: mixing shadows and T/S

    Hi Martin,

The only reason for Shadow copies is to move support files off the network load. For Terminal Servers, effectively the network on the TS systems is effectively as fast as the system goes, so shadowing would probably have a very small effect on performance of a TS session.

But mixing them should have no issues as long as you keep the support files in sync.

      Re: mixing shadows and T/S

Thanks Ira. No, I would not "shadow" a T/S session. It works kinda-like PCAnywhere - keystrokes and screenrefresh. I was just trying to find out if anyone had tried mixing the two and run into hidden gremlins. And yes, I use the auto refresh for shadows via the opt number.

My next thing to explore is whether to put T/S on a separate server, or just add it to the main. We are running a zeon 3.2 gig currently with 4 gig ram, but would maybe add a 2nd processor and bump to 8 gig ram. That way I can distribute the T/S users.

Two have recommended putting T/S on a separate server, but why is beyond my current understanding level.

        Re: mixing shadows and T/S

Why not put them all on the TS? Cut down on a lot of network traffic. If the TS is the same server as where the DB fires are I think you would be farther ahead since the server would not have to be sending all of the data to the client PC's.

As to the answer to your question, no problems except way slower. I some times use my PC with A5 on it. The speed diffference is way slower then when in a TS session. The only reason I would do it was when I was wanting to cut and paste info between programs on my computer & what is in A5. I have the TS set up where users can not Cut & paste between the TS and the user computer.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I think the only question I have left is whether or not I can get it to print to as many printers as they can currently print to.

I checked and for about 1300 we can add a 2nd processor (giving me 4 CPU's total) and 2 more gig to the memory and a 5 user T/S. Since most of the use of the server is for my software, I think that will be enough to handle it.

          *******************
why do you turn off the cut and paste?

Do search on multi processors. That will help you get use of all of th processors since Alpha will only use one without your intervention. I have shut off cut and paste so the users have to really work at stealing information.

Getting printing to work is no problem as long as you make all the printers network or shared printers.

I have 4 gigs mem, 2 processors (4 cpu), 10 users and speed is no different if one or all 10 users are on at same time. Even have same speed when working from the house. Only problem I have not worked out yet is printing to the house when I am at the house. Just have not spent time trying to figure out how to get this to work.

              Re: mixing shadows and T/S

              Martin,

My only experience with TS is with a client who has a separate TS server reserved only for users working from home. When a worker is in the office they use a regular network file server with cabled workstations. The A5 database is of course on the file server which means the TS server has to access it over the network. Since that is the case, both TS users and non-TS users use shadows (just one on the TS) and no one has experienced any issues with this.

Do note, however, that I have found at least one thing that does not work in the TS environment, namely Report.Send() [and other similar functions]. This works only when using the A5 built-in email client--not when using a default external email client. Don't know why this should be, but there it is. I had to set up a routine to check what the environment was and use the appropriate email client and a special send only email account for use when sending from the TS. This is not good but I see no way around it given that they really prefer using Outlook.
