Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Error Message

We have an application running on a server with three workstations running a network shadow. This has been running fine for years and we are suddenly getting the following error:

    APPLICATION ERROR

    Error definition:
    -----------------------
DESCRIPTION: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
    R:\A5\SUTHLGL\BILLTO.DDD
    SCRIPT: index_rebuild_auto1
    at LINE #: 862
    TABLE: r:\a5\suthlgl\menu.dbf
    FORM: Main Menu
OBJECT: BUTTON16 (Note: Button 16 is the button on the main menu form that runs the index rebuild function)
    MODE: 0

    ERROR CODE: (ref.) 1000

The application is totally unusable once this error occurs. Clicking on any button from the main menu to open a subform gives an index/filter error. If I try to rebuild the indexes (using Cal's Index Rebuild Utility), I am given the above error.

The only way to correct it is to reboot the server and then rebuild the indexes.

This is suddenly happening 2-3 times a day.

I have not made any changes or updated the build in quite some time. FWIW, we are running build 1457-3177.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Tim

The server is running Windows Server 2003. I have done the standard Windows updates but I wouldn't suspect that would cause files to be left open/locked.

A few years ago we started getting probelms with indexes on a networked applications on one of the shadows. Looking on the server we found that one workstation had the files for that table still open even though they were no longer in Alpha. It turned out to be a faulty network card.

Was it a faulty network card on the workstation?

If I'm not mistaken the problem has arisen from the same machine each time it has occurred. I'll try replacing it today.

          Thanks

For what it's worth, I changed the network card on the workstation that always caused the above problem.

For the first time in about 10 days, we were able to get through the entire day without an error.

I appreciate the tip - I would never have come up with this one.

Hope that this fixes the problem. We had several days of problems because one workstation was leaving files open so I remembered what solved it for us!
