Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Hi Steve,

    What actually is your question?

Is your startup form with browse filtering the records now or do you want somebody to show you how to do it?

What is everything that gets held up?

What is the query you are trying to run?

      Re: browse within

OK I don't know all the terms to use but I will try my best.
I have an A5V9 dbase using shadow Dbases on the lan. I have an inbound telemarketing office. I have 150,000-190,000 records loaded. I am using A5 security, I got a start up form with buttons for each dept, and a button to a management form. The boss is asking me for a browse window that the reps can see all of their clients in a seperate little window few details that they can see. I want to make that browse window on click to show certain records, by the user_name() rep is a field on table enrolment that I want to query, lookup I'm not sure the way to go. Ps I started this dbase with 0 experence in dbase or development. I'm going to school now for my AA in computer information science. Haven't learned a VB yet or C++ just starting my A+. I see all the support here that has guided me along the way just reading others posts.

        Hi Steve,

That explains better what you are after.

There are many ways to do this.

Have a button on the opening form to open form with the browse.

Either have the the filter built into the form which takes the value of User_Name()=a field in the table, or use the filter from the button when calling the form.

With a little more experience you can have the browse form open automatically with the data filtered.

I have a membership application that opens a form with a browse that lists all the members whos birthdays are in the next 30 days. If there are none then the form does not open.

            Re: browse within

            Steve,

            1) typically it's advantageous to have the startup form be based on a dummy table. Use the startup form as a sort of menu, with buttons leading to data entry forms.

            2) Is the browse to be filtered on a data entry form? Or do you want to be able to pop up a separate form containing the browse? In either case it seems to me that limiting the range of records displayed in the browse will involve running a query against the enrollment table based on the user's log in name. It sounds as though you have this working but want it to be faster, is that right? First thought here is that you should use lightning query optimization by defining a new index for the enrolment table based on the rep field.
