Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    User Changing Sort Order of Report

    Can you build a report that when viewing the report on a form with a supercontroler... the user can change the sort order.. maybe a field on the form that holds the fieldnames of the 3-4 fields in the report user would have option to sort by? Can you set the sort order of a report to a variable list that is selected by user on the form?

    So if report has

    Ticketno Customer FromCity ToCity

    and while in report user may want to sort by date, then sort by From, etc.. can this be done..

    And can you zoom to a place in a report... so i'm looking at a list of all tickets for a customer, and i want to go to a specific ticket number on report... can i zoom or goto a record on a report?

    i know browses will give me what i'm asking for above, but with the new drill down onpush features in the reporting, i love sending the client right to a report with same information as browse had, because then they can print right away, or with onpush commands i can send them places, drill down to detail reports, etc...

    Yes. I just tested this and you can. The control that holds your sort fields would need to return the actual field name. And if the field is in a child table then it needs the table name as well. This can still be made user friendly by using this syntax in a user defined list.
    Code:
    Ticket Number|Ticketno

    or if using the alphasports v9ReportPreview form

    Price|Product->Retail
    The supercontrol has a property (which corresponds to the order setting within the supercontrol designer)in the form of
    Code:
    topparent:SuperControlObject.Settings.Order
    which can be set and then the object refreshed. So if your Supercontrol is called ReportPreview1 you would put the following in the change event of the field list of your sort choices.
    Code:
    topparent:ReportPreview1.Settings.Order = "\""+this.value+"\""
    ReportPreview1.refresh()
    The order expression needs to be a quoted quoted value so pay special attention to the quotes. You can see an example of what is need in the object explorer.(you may need to specify an order in the supercontrol designer before the property shows up in the object explorer)

    In my testing I had to remove the sort that was defined in the actual report before the form control's sort would take affect.

    As for the zooming to a point on the report I don't think we can do that yet. You can define report toolbar buttons, which include the zoom button, as part of the control. But the zoom button does not seem to zoom in on the point where you click the mouse as it does in a standard preview.

      Is there potential for conflict here if the sort sequence selected by the user is not consistent with group breaks defined in the layout?

        I would have to say that there is a good possibility of that. The report that one would apply some thing like this to would have to be suitable for for the job. Exactly how the conflict would manifest itself or what the result would be could only really be determined on an individual basis.

          Tim, perhaps the designer could limit the sorting options available to the user so as not to cause the group breaks to become jumbled.

            As always Tim, you are right on the money! I had tried that approach and had just missed the onchange event ... but it works like a charm!!!

            Yes, i had to take the sort out of report, and because my report has no groups, it is quite simple and the client will love it!!!!!

            Thanks!
