Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Form Size Question

Out of curiosity...What is typically the largest (in inches) size you will make a form?

I know with the variety of screen sizes and resolutions, one computer may display a complete form and another might hide part of it and display scrollbars.

So, if I plan on filling the screen with a form, (blah blah "fill","fill") and plan on making the forms object sizes fluid...what would you suggest be the largest size for the form in design mode?

I hope this question makes sense:)

      Re: Form Size Question

      Hi Tony,

Selwyn did a tutorial on xdialog on Monday. I did not attend as I like the battle of working blind without the updated help files. But this can be a way of solving the different screen size problem.

If you create an MDI xdialog (examples in the learning xdialog database), you can then put an HTML form on the xdialog and set its size properties to 100% for width and height you can then have a form that fits different screen sizes fully as in the following examples (my screen is turned to Portrait and the other one is in landscape)

Thanks Lance. I was scheduled to attend that learning session but was unable to attend.

I am just now trying to learn more about xdialog. I will use your suggestion as a learning op and see what I can figure out.
        Thanks again.

I've read all the hints and hyperlinks to educate myself on this subject which is certainly not new. I am going to continue to design my forms 7 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall as that seems to work on all monitors. I can't believe, in this day and age, that we are not designing forms that adjust to screen size and center themselves! But, we got what we got. Oh, don't remind me there are centering methods. I have examined all of them too and I guess they just don't work in NH because I've never been able to get them to work. It's easier to just give in.

Never say never Jim. There's always a better way to skin a cat. (Sorry for the metaphore) Anyhow, I'm just getting acquainted with A5 have been in the Visual Foxpro world for the last 15 years or more.

In Visual Foxpro, there was a property that you could set to center your forms when they opened and that works great. However, some users don't want that, they want them to open in the last place they left them. We could never come up with an automatic routine to resize the forms based on the resolution of the monitor, so we opted for a setting in our configuration that allowed them to set the form size based on a percentage of the default. So they could make it larger, say 120%, if they had a large monitor and smaller, say 92%, if they had a smaller monitor. This seemed to work well and we'll probably experiment with this if we can't find any other solution.

What about the anchoring of objects on a form? Does this not work when they resize it? If it does, the only question is, can you determine the resolution of the monitor and then adjust the size of the form accordingly?

The anchoring works. You can anchor things on the left side or the right side of the window but that doesn't adjust the screen size really. I haven't experimented with that anchoring much although Alpha Sports uses it. Maybe it's something I have to look into. If it requires xbasic coding, I'm not experienced enough for that. Even if I could just CENTER it, it would be fine and look OK. We could design forms for a small screen and just center them for everything. That would be better than a small form on the left side.

                        Jim,
I am sure you already have tried this but have you tried the action script to open a form. It has the option to center the form on the screen just like form.view("formname","","center", "center") does.

                          Re: Form Size Question

I had no idea those options existed. I was thrilled to hear about it. So, I immediately went to try it on two forms. I saw no change. I even set one to have horizontal position "right" instead of center and saw no change. Does this require special settings in the form design? Like, window or page settings? If we have the form set for maximize or some of those other options, will that negate this feature?
