Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Report - Getting bitmap to change with each record

Could one of you A5 experts have a look at this database and see what I'm doing wrong? I 've put a text field and a bitmap on a report. I've set the detail OnChange to feed the bitmap the path and filename of an image - path and filename is found in the text field. All the bitmap images come out the same. I thought the code would be executed after each detail record.

I've included the jpgs - you may have to create the same path structure or change the records to reflect where you put the images.

    Thanks all,

    David

    Hi David,

Is this what you wanted to do? See attached. Open form Films and add a new image. Click into image area and icon appears to the right. Click there to navigate to image. No need to type in path and filename.

Believe it or not, this is the first time I have done this.

I got the answer from Alpha Sports.

Re: Report - Getting bitmap to change with each record

Thanks Keith, but the solution you've found doesn't really address the OnRecord event problem I'm having.

By adding a JPEG type field to the database and actually storing the image in the database the <table>.FPT grows by the size of the image. I want to simply reference the image already stored on a drive... a much better way of dealing with large numbers of images.

Any experience with the OnRecord event?

Don't need any coding. Place an image file reference field directly on the report.

Thanks Stan, I've come across the Image File Reference but had forgotten about it. So, it just stores the path of the image, not the image itself. I think that will do quite nicely.

Still would like to know why my OnRecord Event is not working, but that may have more do to with the fact that I'm trying to set an Object's properties in a Report, as opposed to a Form or Browse window.

          Thanks Stan,

          David

            Hi Stan,

I'm missing something here, probably a couple of brain cells.

I can't see where the the image path is being stored for the Picture field to pick it up.

When I clicked in the Picture field on the form I can load the Image, but am I getting the Image or just the reference to it?

Re: Report - Getting bitmap to change with each record

I added a field named "pic" to the table.

I can't see where the the image path is being stored for the Picture field to pick it up.
Onsaverecord field rule translates text1 into an image file reference and stores it in the pic field. Just did that because that's what was there to work with.

When I clicked in the Picture field on the form I can load the Image, but am I getting the Image or just the reference to it?
The reference to the image is stored in the pic field and "calls" it when the record is displayed.

Also I notice the massive deterioration in quality of the image from the form to the report, is this to be expected?
Apparently the "absolute" mode doesn't function too well on a report. Change it to best fit and the resolution seems similar.

                Stan,

Thanks for that. It makes for loading so simple.

Is there a way to click on an image to treat it as a thumbnail?

Not that I am aware. There are some freeware thumbnail creators and image renamers. I would suggest creating thumbnails, naming them appropriately, adding another image ref field, ......

Hey Keith... from the help file...

Image File Reference fields - store the paths and filenames of Windows Bitmap (.BMP) or JPEG (.JPG) images in the database, while the images are stored independently in Windows folders. For many applications this is a more efficient way of storing images, and it can result in much smaller databases.
