Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Problem with sys_shell()

    Using sys_shell() to open able2convert.
    This is an application that converts PDF files to word,excel or powerpoint.
    Works very well manually.

    using the code below:-will not get the path (vpath)
    and will not open specified document-It opens able2convert but makes the user to manually select the file

    '-------- results from trace window -----------
    Path =
    Path2 = y:\alpha5v8\pritchard_purchase\pdf\
    REQ Number = U12C-00016
    vapplication = C:\Program Files\Investintech.com Inc\Able2Extract 5.0\Able2Extract.exe
    vfile2open = U12C-00016-071108.pdf
    vcombined = C:\Program Files\Investintech.com Inc\Able2Extract 5.0\Able2Extract.exe y:\alpha5v8\pritchard_purchase\pdf\U12C-00016-071108.pdf
    '-------- results from trace window -----------

    Any ideas on my code?

    trace.clear()
    dim global vreqnumber as C
    dim global vfilename as C
    dim global vpath as C
    dim global vpath2 as C
    dim global vfile2open as C
    dim global vapplication as C
    dim global vcombined as C
    var->vapplication = ""

    var->vfile2open=""
    var->vcombined=""
    t5 = A5.GET_PATH()+ "\\"
    t6 = "y:\alpha5v8\pritchard_purchase\pdf"+chr(92)
    var_vpath = t5
    var->vpath2 = t6

    var->vfile2open=trim(var->vfilename)
    var->vcombined = var->vapplication +" "+ var->vpath2 + var->vfile2open

    trace.WriteLn("Path = " + var->vpath)

    if var->vusername = "Charlie Crimmel" then
    'able2extract
    sys_shell(var->vcombined,1)
    end if

    'able2extract
    script_play("Under_development")
    end if

    Re: Problem with sys_shell()

    Your code looks fine to me. Do you have any documentation for the program that indicates you can open a file as you are attempting to do it (parameters/syntax involved)? Can you do this with a windows shortcut? If so what does the shortcut say?

    I tried googling the application name but just got a lot of pirate site hits.
    There can be only one.

      Does the path for the first file contain spaces? You might need to put \" around the paths in the command string.

        Thanks:
        This is a link to their site:
        http://www.investintech.com/prod_options.htm
        There is a free trial available. It works real nice manually.

        Per their tech support, the desktop version will not allow passing file names. but their command line may allow this

        Still Checking.

        Thanks

          Their own tech support only thinks it MAY allow it?! Hmm...

            Re: Problem with sys_shell()

            Ah yes checked it now, what you bought is a desktop version, which has no startup parameters so won't work with sys_shell.

            What do you actually need or want to do? There are free tools available & A5 has some built-in functions for RTF, plain text and HTML export from PDFs too...

              Re: Problem with sys_shell()

              Not that I would recommend it or attempt it myself, just to think about the power offered to us by Alpha.

              You could....

              read the registry value for the program used to open pdf files - REGISTRY.SYS_GET( Entry as C )

              Code:
              ? registry.sys_get("HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AcroExch.Document\Shell\Open\Command")
              = "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe" "%1"
              change it to Able2Extract.exe - REGISTRY.SYS_SET( Entry as C, Data as C )

              sys_open() your desired file

              set it back to the original when done
              REGISTRY.SYS_SET( Entry as C, Data as C )

                Might need a bit more manipulation to find the registered program for an extension.

                Code:
                typ =  registry.sys_get("HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf")
                ? typ
                = "AcroExch.Document"
                keyis = "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\"+typ+"\Shell\Open\Command"
                ? keyis
                = "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AcroExch.Document\Shell\Open\Command"
                ? registry.sys_get(keyis)
                = "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe" "%1"
                There can be only one.

                  Right now A button on the form creates and saves a PDF from the Report.
                  Opens Email and fills in the To and From, attaches the PDF
                  and the user just has to send the email.

                  The Customer asked if It could also create the same report format in Excel (instead of the PDF) so that they could copy and paste the info that they needed.

                  Thanks
