Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    help with function and Alias method

    I am writing a function that opens a form from another form and then edits certain object properties.

    i.e. button on form A runs a function that opens form B and sets object properties in form B.

    The code in the function works fine when on a button in form B or in the oninit of form B but gets an error when run from another form. I think this is down to the method I am using to change the objects properties. I am using 'parentform:' which it obviously isn't when called from another form.

    What should I use in these circumstances?

    Take a look at the examples for form.load()

    Code:
    dim frm as P
    frm = Form.load("customer")
    frm:Tables:customer.filter_expression = "State_prov = 'MA' "
    frm:Tables:customer.order_expression = "Company"
    frm:Tables:customer.query()
    frm.show()
    frm.activate()
    There can be only one.

      Re: help with function and Alias method

      Stan,

      Thanks for the help. I have found the problem but the solution is eluding me. I have put together an example of what I'm doing which can be seen below.

      Code:
      dim objv as c
      dim opn as p
      dim tbl as p
      frm_nam as c

      frm_name="a_form_name"
      opn = form.load(frm_nam)
      tbl=table.open("my_table")
      objv=tbl.object_idf 'object_idf field contains the object properties path
      opn: eval(objv) = tbl.form_word ' form_word field contains the new object property data.
      The problem appears to be with the eval() function and the opn pointer.

      If it is hard coded
      Code:
      opn:Button2.text = tbl.form_word
      works fine.

      But when I use the eval(objv) I get
      Code:
      opn: Button2.text = tbl.form_word
      An extra space has been introduced between the opn: and the button2.text which causes the error.

      I tried to remove the space between the opn: and eval() as follows but get unknown function error.
      Code:
      opn:eval(objv) = tbl.form_word
      I originally had this code on the actual form (form B)
      Code:
      parentform: eval(objv) = tbl.form_word
      which worked.

      Any ideas?

        Re: help with function and Alias method

        I think what you want is not

        opn: eval(objv) = tbl.form_word

        but

        eval("opn:"+objv) = tbl.form_word
        There can be only one.

          Stan - Many thanks.

          I have just spent about 3 hours trying various things to no avail but that worked perfectly.
