The Alpha Software Forum Participation Guidelines

The Alpha Software Forum is a free forum created for Alpha Software Developer Community to ask for help, exchange ideas, and share solutions. Alpha Software strives to create an environment where all members of the community can feel safe to participate. In order to ensure the Alpha Software Forum is a place where all feel welcome, forum participants are expected to behave as follows:
  • Be professional in your conduct
  • Be kind to others
  • Be constructive when giving feedback
  • Be open to new ideas and suggestions
  • Stay on topic


Be sure all comments and threads you post are respectful. Posts that contain any of the following content will be considered a violation of your agreement as a member of the Alpha Software Forum Community and will be moderated:
  • Spam.
  • Vulgar language.
  • Quotes from private conversations without permission, including pricing and other sales related discussions.
  • Personal attacks, insults, or subtle put-downs.
  • Harassment, bullying, threatening, mocking, shaming, or deriding anyone.
  • Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
  • Sexually explicit or violent material, links, or language.
  • Pirated, hacked, or copyright-infringing material.
  • Encouraging of others to engage in the above behaviors.


If a thread or post is found to contain any of the content outlined above, a moderator may choose to take one of the following actions:
  • Remove the Post or Thread - the content is removed from the forum.
  • Place the User in Moderation - all posts and new threads must be approved by a moderator before they are posted.
  • Temporarily Ban the User - user is banned from forum for a period of time.
  • Permanently Ban the User - user is permanently banned from the forum.


Moderators may also rename posts and threads if they are too generic or do not property reflect the content.

Moderators may move threads if they have been posted in the incorrect forum.

Threads/Posts questioning specific moderator decisions or actions (such as "why was a user banned?") are not allowed and will be removed.

The owners of Alpha Software Corporation (Forum Owner) reserve the right to remove, edit, move, or close any thread for any reason; or ban any forum member without notice, reason, or explanation.

Community members are encouraged to click the "Report Post" icon in the lower left of a given post if they feel the post is in violation of the rules. This will alert the Moderators to take a look.

Alpha Software Corporation may amend the guidelines from time to time and may also vary the procedures it sets out where appropriate in a particular case. Your agreement to comply with the guidelines will be deemed agreement to any changes to it.



Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Form Window Name Confusion. Help!

    I have a form design with quite a number of action scripts. Everything has been going swimmingly until today when I go to edit some of the form�s action scripts. �Script Genie: Set Properties of Object(s)� has on its own accord decided that the scripts were all defined to operate on a form or browse window that is not open. Huh? I�m staring at it but apparently Alpha thinks its called something different. The original form as created was named �Maintain Properties� which is as it still appears in the forms list where I select it to open in either view or design mode. But the script genie doesn�t see it that way. The script genie appears with ann ERROR and prompts me to select another window, with one alternate available named Maintain_Properties1. I can proceed to replace the window reference(s) in the genie with this new alternate and the form works. But having to rework though a considerable number of action scripts to ensure the form window is correctly bound to the scripts is quite a nuisance. Plus I don�t get why this happened in the first place and therefore have concerns about it randomly occurring again. I don�t see where Alpha permits the bound form window reference name to be modified so as to be able to simply reset the name back to the original �Maintain_Properties� and get the scripts to work as originally built. I checked Object Explorer but don�t see it there. ????

    I'm not sure I understand your question but can explain the form name confusion. If you have a form open multiple times, Alpha suffixes the name with numbers to alias them.

    formname
    formname0
    formname1
    etc

    It seems you might have had multiple instances open when you created your Action Scripting?
    There can be only one.

      Stan thanks for your reponse. I am aware that A5 generates aliases for all sorts of objects when it detects there is a dupilcate. But in this case the form was only opened with one instance. I opened the form in view mode and then switched into design mode using the tool bar icon in order to move a couple of fields and to place another one onto the form. Because the new field needed to be included in some action scripts that control properties of objects (e.g. read only, visbible, etc.) I then tried to open the approriate action scripts for editing and the genie said that they were no longer bound to the original form window and insisted that I bind them to another open form window - the only one open/available at that point according to the genie being a newly named form Maintain_Properties1. Up until this instance of editing the form's action scripts the correct form window name had been bound to them. No longer.

      What I am asking is if and how I get the genie to rebind the action scripts to the a form window name using the same name as the as the form is actually called and stored in the dictionary; or perhaps edit the aliased form window name back to the name originally used. Or am I stuck having to use the alias name A5 assigned and I have to individually, manually rebind all the action scripts to this alias.

      In other cases where I have seen the genie unbind a form window it has offered both the original and the generated aliases as alternatives to select from for rebinding. Not so in this case. Also, I notice that when opening the form either in view or design mode A5 generates no errors indications that I can see to point out that the form window is unbound. Nothing appears in the trace log. The only way I knew it was when I actually attempted to edit the action scripts. If the tool pereceives that scripts are no longer bound to an open form window wouldn't it make sense that an error flag should be produced when first opening the form to alert the uiser or developer to the problem?

        What is happening is not what you are thinking but goes along with what Stan has said.

        If the genie assigned an action to a suffixed form, believe me that you had such a form open.....it may not have been visible but it WAS open! This will happen most times to users when the form is opened as a dialog form. This type of form must be closed in a different way and will explain if this is indeed the case (or a search of the messageboard would bring up the answer as well). There are times also that an action depends on a certain form being opened and you will get the error you mentioned when this happens as well--test it out next time when the error happens and then open the form that is "missing" or referenced by the action.
