I seem to have a very long list of global variables since the box that is displayed is way too large for my screen...
Only by some very deft mouse movements am I able to get the dialog box to close.

I cannot find any means of controlling the size of the list or the box in the chm. Does anyone have an answer for this problem????

I am using the code as follows:

Some indication of the end result you want might help.

Are you just trying to capture a list of the global variables and their current values? Just get to the interactive editor and type

? global_variables()

Are you trying to check the values of some variables at a certain point in a script? Use some ui_msg_box() lines to display them or trace.writeln() and examine the trace window.

It is a resizable dialog.... Move the edges of the dialog..

Can you post an image of what you are seeing?

OK --
more specifically --

in one database, the 'new' tabbed display box comes up just fine. There is only one global variable in that database and it is displayed. It's new and still being developed.

In another database, the box comes up with the top and the bottom off the screen and the sides are OK. The sides can be adjusted to any desired width, but the top and the bottom cannot. I can just barely see the bottom of the 'red X' box at the top one time and can click on it to close the box. Another time, I can just barely see the top of the 'close' box and can use that to exit the display. In both cases, there are no variables listed on the screen.....

I am aware that there could be a problem with my database, but it is not readily apparent.

Does this help or do you need to see a 'pix'. I have Screen Shot and can try if really necessary.

I am (regrettably) resurrecting this old thread because I am still having problems
with the listing of global variables. An app has a looooong list of global variables
and occasionally they need to be listed and reviewed.

Using A5_show_variable() creates a wonderful display if you only have a few
variables.
In my case I have many and the box that is displayed does not stay within the
confines of the monitor..... The top and bottom of the box are off the screen and
I have to 'lower' the bottom Windows bar in order to get to the 'exit button' for
the global var display.

Is there any way to limit or otherwise 'size' the box to keep it on the screen?

Scrolling across the top to find the variable needed is not really a problem but
I can't see the top or the bottom of the display box.

If there are only a few global vars, the box is displayed properly.

Any help appreciated.

D, I don't have an answer for you, but here's a suggestion. Why not create a table in the app and store the variable names there, along with some information about their data types, and uses. As changes are made in the app, update the table.

I had a similar situation in which I wanted a ui_msg_box() to appear with a list....I was able to set a limit on how many lines were displayed (set mine to 40) and then have the option of whether to have this list saved and then another option to have the list printed out....all from the ui_msg_box().

If you use the individual functions to gather your variables--Global_Variables(), Session_Variables(), and Local_Variables()--then you could do the same by creating a crlf() list of each by creating a loop, limiting them, and adding whatever options you want.

I would love to give my example here and may, but have to take out some info and modify it to be more generic. I can't even give a screenshot yet.

I just wanted to let you know it definitely is doable and will help you accomplish it if you need help in doing so.

Stan, the man: I converted my action script to show and it works fine. I added action 'open a non-alpha file' and made the path, the app path. It works like a charm

took me a while to get back to the problem but your solution(s)
are very nice.

Not sure yet if I like having all the global User Defined Functions
as a part of the global variable list, but it doesn't hurt to have
them there.

Shouldn't be too hard to subtract them from the variable list with

a5.Udf_Enum()

Suppose the variable new_list has the global_variables() output. You can fill a variable, uds, with the output of a5.udf_enum(). Massage that slightly to match the format of the entries in new_list, and then subtract uds2 from new_list.
