Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

NEED: ZONE OCR ActiveX & Reliable High Speed Scanner

I have been asked to bid on a project for a client of mine. They want to start a document management system. I would need to develop an application to store, index and search the database for the information and then display it so it can be printed, emailed, etc..

Before I give my answer to the client, I need to know if anyone has used or know of an OCR ActiveX control that has ZONE OCR.

For those unfamiliar with the term, I only need to OCR certain areas of a page. These areas have the employee's name and Social. I don't need to OCR the entire document since most of the information is hand written. Once I OCR the page I will have the info necessary to enter the data into a table and also rename the scanned file to the employee's name & social.

The process I am leaning towards is to use the Zone OCR to gather the info. Once the OCR is complete, create a new record with the OCR data, rename the PDF from 200808121222.pdf to LastName First 123456789.pdf. This way even if the database is trashed, the PDF's will have the main info in the name of the file and searchable OCR at least on the first page. Of course if there is a duplicate, it would add an ''a', 'b', etc.

If I can't find a Zone OCR ActiveX, the other alternative is to manually enter the employee's data into the table and this cannot be an option. The client has over 200,000 documents with 20 pages each they need scanned. That comes out to over 4 million pages! BTW, outside vendors are running in the 10 cent per image range. Since the paper form is an 11x17 folded in half, it is really only 2 million pages. So the quotes are in the $200,000 - $250,000 range.

If anyone has any ideas for this project, I am all ears. Also, if anyone knows of a reliable, high speed duplex scanner, I would be thankful.

You might look here. http://www.scanstore.com/Scanning_So...DK/default.asp I just googled "zone ocr activex" and came to this site.

It sounds like a lot of money at 200,000 plus, but it sounds like a lot of work too. I hope they have a great scanner.
    Try this sight? http://www.fujitsu.com/us/services/c...FRwzgQoddVpsmw

    Good Luck

I saw this info also when I googled it. I was looking for people with experience using Scanning ActiveX controls.

Dr. Peter has done something like this. I think you can find it in the code archives.

I'm working on a scanning project using Dosadi's EZTwain driver (the one used by Peter Wayne in his book) and an OCR product called Transym.

As things stand now, EZTwain's ActiveX control can't do an OCR recognition of a region of a page. (They have another product which can, but it doesn't integrate with V9 the way the ActiveX control does.) Integration of EZTwain and Transym was really straightforward.

Spike from Dosadi told me that he was willing to add the ability to do a region OCR scan if I was willing to work with an Alpha version. He's very willing to help if and when there are any issues with his product.

            Barry,

I can highly recommend Dave's suggestion of the Fujitsu scanner. Bought mine nearly a year ago and haven't looked back, great bit of kit.

We use this to scan in Bills of quantities, it automatically converts them to searchable PDF's. Then I use Omnipage OCR on the PDF to read the items from the page and output this into an excel spreadsheet, which in turn when processed is imported into Alpha 5. Bit long winded and could probably automate a few more steps, but it works with pretty good results.

I too can vouch for Omnipage. It supports batch processes for groups of documents so it may be useful. I never did a huge job with thousands of docs, though.
