Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Cannot create lookup error

    I have a lookup definition in a table for the field "company" as follows

    lookup styles: Table Lookup
    Table: cust.dbf
    Linking field: company
    display order:
    filter: type="Customer.andActiveinact="Active"

    Several fields fill in

    Browse layout to display Customer Bill Address (this is a saved browse layout)
    allow exceptions: Popup on mismatch

    When a user is entering an invoice in the "company" field, they type in a part of the company name, hit enter, the list of customers appear, they choose one and it fills in the company, etc...

    The problem is that sometimes the user types in the name and instead of the list of customers (customer bill address saved layout) they get "cannot create lookup. lookup definition not found" or something like that.. and there is no list... if they kick everyone out and "reindex" it will most of the time "find the list" again, but only temporarily until it happens again... but i've also seen it where if you just wait a few minutes and try again it will find it...

    I've searched the archives and can't find a solution, and may have already posted this, so sorry if this is redundant.

    I just can't figure out what the issue could be? It doesn't seem like it's indexing, although that usually solves it, but i'm at a loss at this point. If it a programming error on my part, i'd love to find it, and if an alpha bug, i'd love feedback on what to do to fix it?

    Anyone have this happen?

    Re: Cannot create lookup error

    i found the post where i'd already asked for help on this, and tried what was suggested, which was "rebuild" form and field rules in V9, but this has not helped, and it is getting worse for the client in number of times it happens.

      type="Customer.andActiveinact="Active"
      this needs to be
      type="Customer.and.Activeinact="Active" in fact, I am not sure why the field customer is in there at all.

      Maybe this would be better
      type="Activeinact="Active"

      I don't know what else could be wrong, but a working example may be a good idea. At least a look at those indexes, could help.

        SORRY

        FILTER = TYPE="CUSTOMER".AND.ACTIVEINAC="ACTIVE"

        In the rolodex "cust.dbf" they have Customers, Pickdrops, Carriers, Vendors... the Company field is "who you are billing" so it is filtered to type="Customer" and the activeinact field is to filter out customers that are no longer active..

          Re: Cannot create lookup error

          Have you tried this without using a browse? Or create anther browse with no filters or anything at all except data. No active index

          .
