Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Linking to Live Access database

I use Alpha Five V8 to create db applications to speed my work up at my office which is buying and selling. The company I work for has an original access db which I wrote approx. 10-12 years ago, before I had heard about Alpha 5!

My question is this: I have always wanted to link to the original access db live tables as this db is used by everyone in the company it has a mine of information in it, some of which I would like to access and read/write into my alpha 5 db. Is this possible with Alpha 5 v8 or do I need to upgrade to v9?

If it is possible in v8 could someone provide some further information on how I might go about this task?

If it is not possible could someone tell me which version of the new program I would need to upgrade to, to be able to accomplish this?

Re: Linking to Live Access database

    Hi Alastair,

My recommendation would be to develop your application in V9. You can still leave your old app running live and use Active Link, which you cant do in V8.

To get you started, I find meaningful data is always the most useful to work with, so create your table in V9 using passive link.

Duplicate the tables in the new app and go from there. Once you have got the app developed and tested empty out the tables and import all the current data.

If you have the Enterprise version of V8 then you can do the same thing there., but as I said only passive linked tables.

Is there something that you want Alpha to do that your Acc.....db cant do?

Re: Linking to Live Access database

      Hi Keith,

Thanks for the fast response, the reason that I moved to Alpha Five from Access was the ease of programming I find Access difficult to get on with, I am no professional by any means! The Genies on Alpha Five write sample x-basic for me and I have previously had some experience with C++ programming which x-basic seems to be related to.

I also liked the smart fields such as the date, e-mail and web fields that are built in with Alpha Five. A colleague and I tried to provide a similar sort of thing in Access and you wouldn't believe the amount of code we had to write! Our version of Access was 2000 so maybe things have changed since then? As I said I have lost interest in Access and much prefer Alpha Five. I have an Alpha Five db that I have been developing over the years for my own use - it saves me loads of time!! Just the other day I was adding a button to create directories on my computer based on some of the fields on a form. I wouldn't know where to start using Access!

One of the reasons I first purchased Alpha Five was the option to read in Access db tables, although I was never able to achieve this on V5 - V8! I own Alpha Five V8 Professional Edition, is there an upgrade to whichever version of Alpha Five V9 I need? What is the likely cost of an upgrade?

Re: Linking to Live Access database

I use V9 Platinum to do this all the time.

V9 allows you to establish active links with your original Access data, where as V8 only allows passive links.

Just like you, instead of redo-ing our Access programs in Alpha, which would be alot of work and require me to re-write all the documentation for the other users, I just link to the data with A5V9 and do what I need.

Thanks for the reply Vince, I have downloaded the trial version of Alpha Ver 9, to see if I can make it do what I want it to.

I am having trouble with the Tablemax function see my other post, have you used this function at all to perform calculations on your Access db via the active link tables?
