Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Disappearing Forms & Reports

I recently opened two of my databases and found no reports or forms in the Control Panel.

    Another database was just fine.

    * I created a test form and saved it.
    * It did not show up in Control Panel
    * I created another test form and saved it with the same name
    * The system asked if I wanted to overwrite

IOW, the forms are out there, but they aren't showing up in the Control Panel.

    I tried A5v8. Same problem.

IOW, it seems there's nothing wrong with my software: It has no problem with another database, and another version has the same problem.

Hardly seems like file corruption, because even new forms don't show up. And why would two databases become corrupted the same way?

Anyway, what can I do to get my forms and reports back?

(My backups cycle every 7 days. If a file has been corrupted longer than that, it's gone)

    TIA for any help.

Press the refresh the control panel icon on the toolbar.

Out of curiosity, are you starting A5 and then opening a database, or are you using a shortcut, or none of the above??

Did you try the refresh icon in the controlpanel?

      Next try compacting.

Starting A5, then opening a database. Works OK on some databases, not on others.

Could it have anything to do with the fact that I relocated the database and all its files to a new folder? I copied them (using ctrl-C/ctrl-V)

None of the field rules has survived, either.

              Yes.

If the original location was not the same directory as the database directory, when you moved them you broke the paths Alpha uses to stitch the tables into the database on startup.

Recommended setup is to keep the tables, indexes, and memo files iin the same folder as the database.

              -- tom

If this is what happened then you just need to "drop" the tables and sets from your database and then "add" them again. Be careful not to "Delete" them. Dropping just disconnects them from the database, Deleteing, wipes them out on your hard drive.

That's good to know, but it doesn't apply. The tables and all associated files were, and are now, in the same folder as the database. I tried it anyway, but it didn't help.

Here's an odd thing. I tried creating a new form (see above). It never showed up in the Control Panel. Then, I created a new database, and moved all the files associated with one table into the same folder. Lo and behold, the test form materialized! But none of the original forms or reports.

Marios, it's not possible for to answer without understanding what changed on your system before the problem began to occur.

Generally speaking this kind of thing happens when (1) the dictionaries containing the form layouts become detached from their tables or sets, or, (2) the user placed the tables in a folder different than the folder occupied by the database library files and then moved the database to a new location.

I don't currently have V9, but I received a call last week from a friend that does and after loading the lastest patch and was asking for advice on recovering his info. He stated on certain DB's he lost all of his forms and reports. Could this be a patch problem? I am assuming here....

I think is a matter of changing the link to active link tables!
But why is this happening - the table is not actually removed, is only the connection that is changing....
