Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Speeding Up an Append

I have an arlog table that stores a single line item for each "invoice" posted... customer, invoice #, invoice date, etc... From here i run aging reports, etc. When money comes in i have an "append" operation that goes to the arlog and appends all records that has a balance<>0 into a artemp table. Once the records are appending i have a way for them to mark the invoices being paid, etc.. then when they "post" it goes and finds the invoices marked in the arlog and posts the payments, etc. The marking and posting works great, but

My problem is that as the arlog table grows it is taking longer and longer to "append invoices with a balance"... because it is going through each record to find the ones with balance<>0.. and not all my customers are in newer, faster computers, so it is getting to be up to 10 minutes to bring them over.

Is there a faster way to append records from one table to another with a filter beside using the typical append operation.. I have had a few of you "experts" helping me write functions for other features that seem to do much more than just this and they work super fast, so it seems there should be a way to create a function to do this same process to make it fast? But i'm still not sure how and when to setup functions, so i'm not sure what to do here.

    Any ideas?

    Hi Lynda,

I'm not sure about any super fast functions, but what does come to mind is an archive table.

This would be a routine run at some convenient time where all the records that have a balance = 0 get appended to the archive table and then are deleted from arlog table, thereby keeping it down to just the records with a balance not = 0.

Linda, look for message threads discussing appends and indexes (or index). IIRC the append updates the index after each record is processed. Opening another copy of the table first, changes the behavior delaying the index rebuild until all are processed. The result is a faster append. Hope I'm remembering this correctly. Of course a hand crafted script would obviate the need of using the append operation at all. -- tom

Not sure what you mean by "opening another copy of the table first", can you elaborate.

Would you mind giving me an idea of how to do it in a script without an append operation?

thanks for the info on appends and index - i'll do a search right now

          Linda,

          1) if you don't have an index on the balance field in the arlog table, build one. It will help Alpha find the non-zero records faster.

          2) the custom script would do this (pseudo code)

          Code:
-open the arlog table for read only access
-use LQO to find the non-zero records
-open the artemp table for read/write access
-loop through all of the records in the query list
-for each record enter a new record to the artemp table like this:
          --- tbl_ptr.enter_begin()
          --- tbl_ptr.customer = arlog_ptr.customer
          --- tbl_ptr.account = arlog_ptr.account
          ------and so on
          --- tbl_ptr.enter_end(.t.)
-drop the query from the arlog table
          -close the arlog table
          -close the artemp table

            Re: Speeding Up an Append

Linda, there's a good example of how to populate a second table by looping through the records in a different table in Dr. Wayne's book "Application Progarmming in Alpha Five Version 5", at pg. 192. I don't think this book is still in print, but maybe it's on your shelf? -- tom
