Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Disable new record lookup

In AlphaSports the Invoice Form has a field "Customer_id" used to find customers from another table through a lookup process. When clicking on the field's triangle, one can change the customer when the lookup table opens. To enter a new invoice, there is a toolbar icon for a new invoice that also opens the lookup table, from which you can then select the customer that the new invoice is being created for.

The issue I have is that I wish to disable the customer id field that is located on the form, since it is possible to change the name of the invoice after creating the invoice, adding items and saving it. If one were to accidentally click on the field and change the name, that would not be a good thing, but that is possible with the AlphaSports sample. If I check off the disable check box, read only check box or hide the field for the "customer_id" field, the toolbar icon will no longer generate a new invoice and have the lookup table appear. It will only generate a new record, with no possible way of entering a new customer's id number.

I tried doing some Events code, but did not get anything accomplished with that either. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Hi Pete,

Have you tried Skip in Field Rules?

      Keith:
Same results as the other attempts. This same issue exists in Quickbooks and has caused some confusion with data entries, so that is the reason I am trying to figure out how to override this.

Pete, to block edits when the customer_id field contains text you can do something like this in the

        OnArrive event

        for the Customer_id field

        Code:
        if alltrim(parent:customer_id.text) <> "" then
parent:date.activate() 'block edits to field, by shifting focus away
        end if
This will not block the normal functioning of the toolbar 'new record' button.

This is an illustration of technique. A more robust solution would include a field in the header record to flag whether ANY edits (at all) are permitted. The suggested script would be modified to look for the flag instead of just checking to see if the field contained text. Alternatively, the onFetch event for the form could check the flag and raise or lower the restriction on changes form wide.

          Tom:
I went in a similar direction earlier today (tried about 10 different ways of fixing this), but no solution. I went to On Change and put in a "disallow edit" command, but that did not work. Should that not also work? I tried the same on On Arrive with same result.

Your suggestion does the trick very nicely.

Thanks again for your quick response.
