Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Lookup and Emply Expression Error Message

I am trying to take an application that works in V8 to V9 and am having problems. After figuring out the first problem and submitting a bug report I got email back saying I was just lucky it worked in V8. Now I am fighting this problem. I have included a sample DB to see if I am doing something wrong or if this is a bug.

    Open form "Mat_to_order"

Go to the last line and in the Low Vendor column type in "fir", "first Choice" will show up, and then hit enter. I get the error message "Empty Expression" If you type more such as "First" I will not get error message.

    Hi Jack,
I don't have v9 but looked anyway--nothing really wrong that I noticed. Not necessary I think though to have the ven_ID display in the lookup definition...I took it out and did not affect v8.

What was it that you were told that was working surprisingly in v8?? Is it relevant to this problem?
    Mike

      Jack,
FYI - I get the same error in V9. Don't know what could be causing it, but it certainly is annoying and slows down data entry. Sounds like it could be a bug.

Works perfect is V8, V9 is when the error message shows up. I have turned this in as a bug report. Have not heard a single word back yet.

I had a lookup expression in a data entry field rule as a default and had "Display as drop down list box" checked under lookup. When I unchecked it would work. I ended writing some code as an event on the form and got around that problem.

          Jack,

Have had similar problems, and it really is a pain. But if you change the look-up for the field auto-popup to popup on entrance the error goes away

Re: Lookup and Emply Expression Error Message

Using v9 30 days tryout with a mysql database and active link tables.

I also have this message when setting up a lookup in a record list list box (choices).

This is new, It did not appear on my previous tests to build forms.

But then again, I seem to receive buggy messages now and then, yesterday, it would give me an error "Error running script: choices" and that is not the case today.

I am evaluating alpha five, but I am starting to be disappointed, this all seems very unstable and buggy, furthermore, it is slow.
