Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      Yeah V9.

      Hey Peter -

      1. If you drag your browses off the tab and onto the form proper, do the problems then go away?
If I move or drag the funky browses onto the first tab pane they all seem to work fine.

Re: Back to Funky Embedded Browses Again

I am using v9 and finding oddities as well. When I go to the "Asset" tab and click on the next or last icon record up in the toolbar area, the asset records disappear. They reappear when clicking on the first record icon.

I have found similar types of record movements, but only on my own coded program and not on AlphaSports, until I start doing some custom coding.

Re: Back to Funky Embedded Browses Again

Pete, the behavior you describe is actually correct if you haven't activated the Assets embedded browse by clicking on it. Unless an embedded browse has been explicitly activated the navigation icons in the tool bar control record navigation for the parent table, which is Properties on the Property tab. In my sample, none of the embedded browses are defined as a tab stops so the only way to activate them is to click on them.

Thus when the navigate to next or to last icon are pushed the effect is to move the entire record view to the next Property record or the last Property record in the properties table. Since no Asset records have yet been defined in the assets table for anything but the first preoperty record, there isn't anything to show in assets if you navigate off the first property. To see what I mean. Focus on the Assets tab and push the navigate next or last icon. The assets browse is emptied. Now put the focus on the Property tab and you will see the property record has moved down, as I would expect, to either the next or last property. Put focus back on the first property in the Property browse, then pick the Assets tab followed by a mouse click onto the Assets table. Then push the navigate next or last button and you will see that the row focus does correctly move between the asset records will correctly.

So this behavior does work as expected. But all the other stuff I've described doesn't.

            Hhhmmm...

It is easy to understand the problem you are having w/o much analysis. In theory everything should work as advertised, BUT...

Your set structure is overly complex and so is your very beautiful form. You need to read Peter Wayne's insightful article:

            http://www.learn alpha.com/SimplifyY...ifyYourApp.htm

That is probably not what you want to hear, but it's a reality. Read the article, take it to heart and rethink your approach.

Re: Back to Funky Embedded Browses Again

I strongly reiterate Peter's comments. You have a set with I think 28 tables, and with referential itegrity turned on for almost all.

Here's an idea for minimizing the amount of redo and throw-away you will need to do. Its an approach I take sometimes:

at the tab change event, save in a global variable the tab and records they were currently on, and open a new form filtered for and showing what you are currently showing on that tab, but on a set containing only the necessary tables. When you create the new form, you can copy from the current tab pane all objects on that tab to the new form, and then delete them from the current form, and then delete the tables from that set. Repeat for all but maybe the first tab. Be sure to copy to the new form and delete before removing the tables from the set, though.

Then, on the new form give them a "back" or close button that will close that form and reopen the main form, and have it go the correct tab and records.

I would also turn off referential integrity if this is on a LAN, and handle deleting the child records with the delete button.

If you do a parentform.refresh_layout() on that set, on a LAN, you will likely have maybe 50 megabytes of data flow back and forth.

                I use snagit from Techsmith.

I gotta figure out how to post pictures of my forms on the message board.
Although a 2 step process if only part of the screen is wanted, you can just use Windows Paint by pressing the Print Scrn keyboard button, open up Paint, Control+V to paste the image and save as whatever. Most here find that saving as a PNG file works best.
