Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Is Windows title length hardwired to 40 characters?

There seems to be a 40 character limit on a Windows title. Is this hard coded somewhere or am I overlooking a setting? Or is this a bug?

I have defined the following with XBasic:

    Code:
    frmAddress.window_title = "Maintain addresses for "
    + TRIM(frmPerson.First_name) + SPACE(1)
    + TRIM(frmPerson.Last_name)
    First name is Robert W.
    Last name is ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

When the form is displayed the Windows title is
    Code:
Maintain addresses for Robert W. ABCDEFG
I've looked in Object Explorer and also the Control panel Settings (under preferences) and can't find anything. I am surprised it is not 256 characters, but maybe A5V9 is overriding it.

    Thanks,

This has been discussed before w/o resolution. Some suggest it is a Window's limitation, but I'm not sure I'd buy that.

      Peter,

      Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

I did do a forum search before posting this problem for the term "windows title" and came up with 9 hits, but none of them dealt the length of the title specifically.

I also did a Google search for Visual Basic and Windows title and came up with no direct hits.

Re: Is Windows title length hardwired to 40 characters?

        Peter,

It looks like this issue is a serious shortcoming, if not a bug per se.

Windows is not the problem, A5V9 is.

In my mind it is very important when using a modal popup window to be able to fully describe what the window is about. In my earlier example, if I click on a button on my contact form for more details about the phone numbers assigned to a contact, I expect to be able to identify what records are displayed in the popup with a windows title, something like "Bob McGaffic's phone numbers yada yada yada". (43 characters long)

Unfortunately, I removed Visual Studio 2005 from my machine when I installed A5V8, but the screens below show that FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced has no problem whatsoever displaying windows titles of a longer length.

If Alpha is retain its bragging rights as superior to FileMaker Pro, this kind of deficiency needs to be addressed.

        Screen 1
Shows A5 form in design mode. Note that a very long title has been specified in Object explorer and is evident
        in the blue windows title.

        Screen 2
Shows A5 form in view mode. Note that title has been truncated to 40 characters.

        Screen 3
Shows FileMaker Pro Advanced form in design mode. Note that a very long title is specified as the code behind the gray push button's event.

        Screen 4
Shows FileMaker Pro Advanced form in view mode. Note that the long title is correctly displayed.

Would tend to agree with Peter on this as so far I only have seen truncation at 95 characters and many times it takes more than that in Windows. Even the browser windows do not truncate at 100 characters in Firefox or IE in Windows.

            Mike,

You must have posted a second or two before I did. See my FileMaker Pro example above.

              Hi Bob,
Only a matter of time so figure to mention it here to you....
Your comment of "If Alpha is retain its bragging rights as superior to FileMaker Pro, this kind of deficiency needs to be addressed." made me wonder why you have omitted the lack of the drag/drop feature...

Alpha has NO drag/drop feature with no work-a-round that has been shared (I have an idea for an emulation but no time to pursue it yet). I have wondered about this for quite some time as to why nothing has been done regarding this as am fairly sure most other db platforms have a way to drag/drop.

Re: Is Windows title length hardwired to 40 characters?

                Mike,

You're ahead of me, but I'm getting there.

The jury is still out on drag/drop. Please see forum member Alan Sawyer's posting "ActiveX" a couple of days ago.

If you have time to open my zipped word document, you will see that Alpha Five is having problems with exposing all the member properties of a control.
I have asked vendor Codejock to take a look at it, before I report an Alpha error.

Why is this imporant? Because this calendar control gives you drag and drop capabilities -- picking up an event or appointment and moving it around on your calendar, or at least the Microsoft Access 2003 demo that I have executed does.

Calendar and scheduling applications lend themselves very naturally to drag and drop. I am very interested in seeing if the control itself will permit this, even though A5V9 does not directly provide such functionality.

I'll keep you all posted on my progress.

Problem is fixed with patch as of 09/06/2008

                  All,

I want to report great news. Even before I formally filed a wish list/bug report on this issue, the Alpha team has fixed it.

As my screen example shows below the windows popup title is no longer restricted to 40 characters.

This is excellent responsiveness! Thank you Alpha Team!

strange I checked again just now, and there was no update available newer than july - did Selwyn send you a url or did you update normally?
if he gave you a url, then the update hasn't been posted yet
