Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    buttons disappearing

    for some reason, as of yesterday, a 5 year old app has started having odd behavior. When the client does a print or print preview, on some of the forms when they come back from printing or previewing, many of the buttons disappear. Am getting the behavior in both V8 and V9.

    The buttons are still there, just not visible. If I tab to them they reappear.

    anyone have any ideas?

    Wonder if this is a video display adapter issue? Is hardware acceleration being used? Large Windows Fonts? What's changed at the workstations that are having trouble?

      thanks Tom,

      well, I've been thinking about that, too. but since before yesterday it ran fine, I'm wondering if it could be windows-related. I tried changing the video settings on one of the computers from high quality to high performance - could'nt find the old acceration setting for it.

        Windows update? We all know how nice MS plays with other products, right?

          that's what I'm afraid of!! Last night I was having a "Cal" moment, where "I hate computers, sometimes." I wrote a little script that fires when they come back that activates all the buttons. I may have to put it in a whole bunch of forms.

            is a worldwide moment. I find myself sharing that sentiment on an ever increasing frequency!

              Martin, does the problem manifest itself when the user is multi-tasking Alpha with other large apps?

                Re: buttons disappearing

                I've seen something similar in V8 where buttons and text boxes don't always show, but if you move the mouse/cursor over their position they'll usually go ahead and 'paint in.' Sometimes have to close the form and reopen it to get all objects to show.

                Extremely intermittent, never been able to nail down the cause, but it does seem to happen more frequently on some computers than others.

                  Tom, I was working last night when everyone was gone, so no other programs were open.

                  I tried using show() and refresh() to no avail
                  I tried using refresh_layout() to no avail
                  but when I used activate() it fixed it

                  Code:
                  list=parentform.Child_Enum("f=button")
                  for i=1 to w_count(list,crlf())
                   eval(word(list,i,crlf())+ ".activate()")
                  next

                    We've also begun seeing display issues here with memo fields first. The field will overlap a dialog box or the dialog goes away but still has portions visible on the screen.

                      I know a lot of XP systems have been updating to SP3 the last couple of weeks.
                      At least they are occurring on my machines and some others that I work with.
