Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

OnKey to change function keys, etc

I really wanted to try to get G Gabriels OnKey routine that he had shown in a previous video to be able to use the + and - keys for dates primarily, but my understanding is that he might not be on the forum for a while, and/or may not be in a position to share the code, so I need to move on until I can get hold of him.

In addition to that I would really like to be able to control some function keys, and have them behave a little differently, for example, instead of Ctrl-B for QueryByForm, then F9 to query and F9 to save, I'd like to probably have some other function key be the equivalent of Ctrl-B, etc.

There was some mention that onkey would really slow down the normal data entry, but G's video seemed very snappy, and I don't think he was using V9, probably more than likely V8.

Can someone give me how much "fun" I'm going to have if I want to try to monitor quite a few function keys, etc via onkey??

Thanks in advance for any help and/or advice,
    Alan

I don't think it is a question of monitoring a number of keys, it is the question of the onkey event itself.

The select case ... end select of itself is fairly efficient but if event code has to fire every time you use the keyboard ....................
    There can be only one.

Re: OnKey to change function keys, etc

      Alan --

Below is an Xbasic listing I generated using action scripts, and then modified slightly. If you spend any time looking at it, you will see there is a lot of extra, unnecessary code. I suspect the Xbasic experts on this forum will find it pretty ugly, and removing the extra code would probably make it run a little faster. However, it seems to work pretty well as is.

Generally, I took the approach that if I recognize a character that corresponds to pushing a button, I push the button with the code. That way, if I later change the code on the button, the code on the OnKey event still works.

The VarLastTimeTouched is used by the timer event to close the form if the user doesn't do something within a certain period of time. Therefore, each time a key is touched, I update this variable to now(). The function keys F9, F11 and F12 are programmed to do certain things. Other characters are also treated as shortcuts if the variable varUseShortCutKeys is on.

Feel free to use this code if you wish.

Re: OnKey to change function keys, etc

Dick, Thanks for the script, I will take a look at it.

Stan, thanks also for your input.

I did read somewhere that rather than doing fully onkey, that hidden buttons worked better.

I'll look thru the script and see if I can get a handle on what it's doing and how I can use it.
