Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    MySQL Active link table - displaying values of a table in a listbox

    I seem to not understand the workings of this very simple thing:

    I have two tables, customers, titles

    customers
    ==============
    customer_id
    title_id
    customer_lname
    customer_fname
    etc

    titles
    ==============
    title_id
    title_text_fr
    title_text_en
    title_text_nl

    Titles correspond to: Mr Miss Mrs (= values for title_text_en)

    In a customer form, I am simply trying to display in a list box: Mr Miss Mrs while the value entered in the customers.title_id should be the corresponding id (1 for Mr etc).

    I am sorry to bother with such an easy question, but seriously, I do not seem to manage to solve it.

    I have tried a form, edited the field for list box, calculated values, selected the table but cannot manage to display the text and enter the id.

    And what is the difference if any with fields rules ?

    And also, as a side question, I have 5000+ entries in the customer table, and alpha seems to run pretty slow, is this normal ?

    ------------------------------------------

    Before joking, read the background:

    We specialize in programming online applications in lamp environment, since we have more and more clients requesting that we take care of their local systems, I am evaluating alpha (been through access and filemaker).

    We mainly intend to use it as a local frontend to our databases (MySQL) while keeping our cms and online solutions.

    Last year, following one of our client's request, we have sucessfully translated a (rather large and complicated) ms access database to MySQL while keeping their in-house frontend (developed over years by the client) but that road was not painless, and it is not very easy to get support from MS (rather impossible), not a problem with the MySQL folks, they are behind you and support is good.

    We also evaluated Filemaker pro, but that is kind of a joke, they advertise a 'partnership' with MySQL but we are far from a perfect integration and support over here in Belgium is .... not efficient ... would be a nice way of putting it.

    So we have good hope for Alpha five.

    And this would explain why I am such a noob regarding syntax, scripting etc etc etc, I only have spent a few hours on it, but we have to make a fast decision.

    The product pretty much convinced us anyway, and this 'problem' is not that important, we can always name the files properly and not even need to store their references, but this would be nicer 'user friendly wise'.

    Three ways about it...

    Firstly in the "field rules" you can set a lookup table (active link to mySQL, readoly) as the source for a dropdown or popup lookup that will automatically appear on any form or browse you put the field on.

    Other than that...

    Either when the form is loaded, run sql_records_get() to populate a global variable of list entries and select that as the source for the listbox, or set up a read only active link table and under "Choices" select that table as the source for the listbox.

      Re: MySQL Active link table - displaying values of a table in a listbox

      I managed to achieve a drop down list with my values by using a Record List-Combo Box.

      I shows the text and the data entered in the field is correct (id corresponding to text)

      However, when i try to edit the properties for the field, I have a popup saying error running script: Choices

      And I assume I have to edit some script to make it so that when I review the records, the selected value in the combo box reflects the value for that record (at the moment it is always set on the first value of the list)

      Using field rules did not work as desired or described above.

        If you want to EDIT the choices you're better off using an active link table as the source of these choices.

          The list comes from data in table titles

          I have entries in customers

          John Doe title: M (= title_id 1 in table titles)
          Jane Doe title: Miss (= title_id 2 in table titles)

          If I change Jane Doe to Mrs (= title_id 3 in table titles)

          This is updated in the MySQL table correctly, but when I review the info in the form, Jane Doe's title is not selected in the drop down list.

          I am trying to mimick this:

          <select name="title_id">
          <option value="1">M</option>
          <option value="2">Miss</option>
          <option value="3" SELECTED>Mrs</option>
          </select>
